Couture: $4M (3.5 base, 500k attribute bonuses); ( 5 projected E5 bonuses (1.25M); but we add those after the fact) so your offer to him would be 4M under the bracket system, but he'll make over 5 thanks to Exhibit 5 bonuses)
Grant: $1.95M (1.6M base, 350k def. specialist)
Martinez: $1,093,750 (25% base increase)

I'm running the fastsim file now, so some of this may change slightly.

I'm taking Cole and Thornton to arbitration , with the intention of franchising Thornton (he'll be sold at Tim Horton's locations everywhere bad coffee is sold).

Also I believe with the fastsim Couture is still 78 OV with 2 85+ bonuses (SK+FA) and one 80+ (EN) bonus, making it still $4m total. So I'll offer him that over 3 years + a team option.

However I should note that endurance is affected not just by pot * ceiling but by training camp (goes up/down randomly by 10), so I'm not sure that the fastsim is necessarily fair for that particular stat. I've advocated just reversing the damn endurance changes in training camp although I realize that would be a pain in the ass.

Endurance is no longer counted for attribute bonuses.

Ah. So just SK+FI is left for defencemen, plus faceoffs for forward. So $3.9M is the figure for Couture?

The Joe Thornton arbitration hearing is complete.

SJ comps: Getzlaf, Richards, Jokinen
Arbitrator comps: H. Sedin, Savard, Jokinen

That said, because of the notion that SJ sent implying that he was going to undoubtedly use his franchise tag on Joe Thornton, that made a big difference in the arbitration hearings. Both parties were instructed to calculate his contract based at full value. SJ proposed a 6.1M contract, a 1.1M decline from his previous salary.

While Thornton underachieved, my arbitrator felt that is was too big of a drop. Though the comps make less money than Thornton, Thornton is a better player than those comparables. The Sedin contract has extenuating circumstances considering that him and his brother must be paid the same amount and likely would be worth more on the open market. Savard was an EHEC UFA, which aren't viewed that favorably, in my estimation, in arbitration proceedings.

With that, my arbitrator suggested a 6.7M number because with the notion of a franchise tag, it still puts Thornton's contract right at the 5M mark, comparable with all of the players used in the arbitration as similar talents.

I agree with this assessment. Without the franchise tag, I would have been closer to the middle, but knowing that the franchise tag is likely going to be placed, putting Thornton in the same salary range as his comparable players is the best course of action.

So, the award is 6.7M for 10 years (since the PM says that he will be franchise tagged for the longest term in the CBA). That would make the franchise tag price 5.025M.

An award has been determined in the arbitration case of Erik Cole.

SJ comps: Ladd, Clowe, Dustin Brown

Arbitrator comps: Agree with SJ, add Booth and Langenbrunner, along with Horton, Hartnell, Legwand.

My arbitrator found that, because of Cole's age, and the fact that he believes that his comps outside of Langenbrunner are largely overpriced for the EHEC contributions, that he was in agreement that Ladd, Clowe, and Brown were the most equal comps for Cole.

SJ proposed 3 years + TO at 2.75M. My arbitrator proposed 2.8M.

In this case, I will side with SJ and award Erik Cole 3 years + a TO at 2.75M. Cole's age may begin to play a factor to EHM by the 2nd/3rd years of this contract. For Cole's production level and intangibles, by no means was a large increase or decrease called for in this case. A slight decrease because of the length of the contract relative to Cole's age and his underachievement of the last couple seasons.

Dan, you can accept/reject Erik Cole at 3 years + TO for 2.75M per.

Tyson Sexsmith & Alex Stalock - 2 year, TW, TO... I guess they need to be arbitrated but I'm assuming they're not getting over $1.5

Not sure what to do about if guys accept QOs or not. May be based on how far off the QO is from what the player wants/should be paid. Will advise.
