EHEC Yearly Awards

Post by NYRNYRNYR »

Hey here's a question I don't see answered anywhere - Why'd these go away after 2013-2014?

They seem fun! If people wanted to reinstitute and vote on last years I'd enjoy that.

Given Awards:
Stanley Cup - Dallas Stars
President's Trophy - Montreal Canadiens - 116
Art Ross - Marian Gaborik (TB) 88 pts (more goals than Rubtsov - do they share it?)
Maurice "Rocket" Richard - Marian Gaborik (TB) 47g

Conn Smythe Trophy (MVP of the Playoffs) - Evgeni Malkin (DAL)

Regular Season Voting Required:
Jack Adams Award (Top Coach & GM for Our League) - (1) FLA; (2) DAL; (3) NSH
FLA & NSH had unprecedented success for their organizations. DAL did a phenomenal job, barely missed the President's trophy, and won the Cup.

John Bucyk Trophy (Most unexpected Impact) - German Rubtsov (NYI); Jonathan Blum (CHI); Nolan Patrick (WPG)
Rubtsov ended up leading the league in points and dominating for the NYI
Blum, +40, 166 shots on goal, all while eating up 27 mins/gm
Patrick, Exploded onto the scene, +16 p increase, +3 mins/gm from the year before, and 1263 faceoffs taken, winning over half

Bob Probert Award (Biggest Agitator with most Impact) - Alex Burmistrov (NJ); Mirko Hoefflin (COL); Arkhip Nekolenko (NYI)
All three of these guys had over 150 PIMs and put up tons of points. I vote for Burmistrov because he put up 31 goals with his 157 PIMs and was a positive +/- player

Lady Byng Trophy (Most Gentlemanly Player) - Auston Matthews (CGY); Thomas Novak (NYR); Sebastien Wannstrom (NJ)
I hate that the Byng is basically the least PIMs with the most points, but its the best way to decide it in a game I figure. (My suggestion is the real NHL should have the refs vote)
Matthews, 8 PIMs, 72 pts
Novak, 8 PIMs, 71 pts
Wannstrom, 8 PIMs, 61 pts

James Norris Trophy (Best Defenseman) - OEL (ARI); Shea Weber (MTL); Cam Fowler (TB)
OEL 50 pts; -2; 294 HG; 244 takeaways; 162 shots blocked
Weber 49 pts; +24; 200 HG; 115 takeaways; 119 shots blocked
Fowler, 46 pts; +27; 189 HG; 112 takeaways; 101 shots blocked

I agree a -2 is not great, but its not unprecedented for an overall (-) player to win the Norris. The fact he had that many hits, takeaways, and blocks, all on a team that was well below MTL/TB with Weber and Fowler earns my vote.

Frank J. Selke Trophy (Best defensive Forward) - Michael Dal Colle (NYR); Eric Staal (CAR); Steven Shipley (NSH)
Michael Dal Colle 245 HG; 57 Takes over Gives; 67 SB (First for Forwards); +15
Eric Staal 263 HG (First for Forwards); 112 Takes over Gives; 48 SB; +31
Steven Shipley 231 HG; 103 Takes over Gives; 26 SB; +5

I'm biased admittedly but giving it to Dal Colle, though many worthy challengers

Calder Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year) - Jack Hughes (PIT); Bowen Byram (BOS); Kaapo Kakko (SJS);
Hughes, 20g, 50pts; 17.5 mins/gm
Byram, 30 pts, 177 hits, 57 shots blocked, 21.5 mins/gm
Kakko, 24g, 52 pts; 16.3 mins/gm

Hughes was on a worse team and still put up 20g/50pts, playing hard minutes. Byram playing that many minutes a game at that age was impressive.

Vezina Trophy (Best Goaltender) - Henrik Lundqvist (TB); Cam Ward (OTT); Felx Sandstrom (CAR)
King Henrik: 90.35 save %; 2.21 GAA; 30 wins (53 gp); 5 SO
Cam Ward: 89.66 save %; 2.33 GAA; 37 wins (67 gp); 5 SO
Felix Sandstrom: 90.09 save %; 2.21 GAA; 38 wins 63 gp); 3 SO

I think all three are worthy, but nod to the King for putting up the numbers with about 10 less games than his counterparts.

Hart Memorial Trophy (Most Valuable to his team) - Eric Staal (CAR); Jonathan Toews (DET); Alex Ovechkin (MTL)
The Big Kahuna Award! I make my votes with the key understanding that the Hart is defined as "player judged most valuable to his team". It is not the award for, necessarily, the best player.

All three are great considerations. Alex had almost 20 goals beyond his closest teammate, was a monster +53, and was all-around fantastic. Toews doesn't have all the perfect numbers, but DET was a bad team last year. Very, very bad. Even so, Toews put up 45g and 82 pts, and was a net (+) player.

I say both fall behind Staal, who not only checks all the boxes Alex did, but we saw what happened in the playoffs. When Staal got suspended, CAR suffered, losing the series 4-2 to FLA, who while very good, got a huge boost not having to play against Staal. And unlike in the real NHL where we can quibble about "a guy not being a team player by earning a suspension" Staal's happened largely b/c of luck.

Conn Smythe:
Evgeni Malkin (DAL)
Leading scorer on Cup winning team. Probably didn't need to explain this one.

Mikhail Grigorenko (DAL)
Brent Seabrook (DAL)

Jack Adams:
Ken Holland (STL)
How else did a team with a mainly vacant GM like St. Louis make the playoffs?

Empty Void (DAL)
Adam Deadmarsh (CAR)

John Bucyk:
German Rubtsov (NYI)
I still don't understand how he nearly won a scoring title.

Zach Boychuk (CAR)
John McFarland (STL)

Bob Probert:
Alexander Burmistrov (MTL)
31 G, 157 PIM.

Mirko Hoefflin (COL)
Dylan Strome (VAN)

Lady Byng:
Jonathon Blum (CHI)
6 PIM while playing 27 minutes per game.

Mark Alt (ARI)
Auston Matthews (CGY)

James Norris:
Shea Weber (MTL)
47 even strength points to lead all D (and one off the team lead for MTL) while being the go to shutdown option.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson (ARI)
Jonathon Blum (CHI)

Hart:
Steven Stamkos (ARI)
41+40 to lead his team in scoring by 26 points.

Alexander Ovechkin (MTL)
Evgeny Kuznetsov (NSH)

Vezina:
Henrik Lundqvist (BUF/TB)
His numbers with TB are especially impressive.

Felix Sandstrom (CAR)
Jake Oettinger (NJ)

Frank J. Selke:
Michael Dal Colle (NYR)
Most shot blocks, second most hits among forwards.

Eric Staal (CAR)
Alexander Ovechkin (MTL)

Calder:
Michael McLeod (FLA)
Led all rookies in assists (37), points (57), and +/- (32).

Kaapo Kakko (SJ)
Andrei Svechnikov (ARI)

Conn Smythe
1. Evgeni Malkin (DAL)
Lead the playoffs in scoring, won 58.6% of his face-offs, etc.

2. Mikhail Grigorenko (DAL)
3. Cristoval Nieves (DAL) (T-5th in goals, T-3rd in takeaways, 1st in hits)

Jack Adams
1. Dallas
Not sure how to vote for this really but going to view it as "GM of the Year" sort of. Dallas was a great team all year and capped it off with their first Cup.

2. Florida
3. Tampa Bay

John Buyck
1. German Rubtsov (NYI)
Surprisingly tied for the league lead with an 88 point season.

2. Zach Boychuk (CAR)
3. John McFarland (DAL)

Bob Probert
1. Alexander Burmistrov (NJ)
31 goals, 157 PIM. Only 7 fights and only 1 win, though...

2. David Cotton (PIT) (maybe homer pick, and only 88 PIM, but 11/14 on fights with 42 points)
3. Mirko Hoefflin (COL)

Lady Byng
1. Jonathan Blum (CHI)
Top-5 in d-man scoring, +40, 223 hits, played 27 minutes a game, and only 6 PIM.

2. Thomas Novak (NYR)
3. Auston Matthews (CGY)

James Norris
1. Oliver Ekman-Larsson (ARI)
Near the top of the league in everything. Top-10 in defenseman scoring, 1st in hits, 2nd in takeaways (2 behind the leader), top-15 in blocked shots, 3rd in ice time. Dominant season.

2. Adam Larsson (NSH)
3. Jonathan Blum (CHI)

Hart
1. Eric Staal (CAR)
A monster defensively (5th in takeaways), dominant face-off man, and 35 goals - 77 points to go with it. A huge factor for Carolina all season.

2. Marian Gaborik (TB)
3. Alexander Ovechkin (MTL)

Vezina
1. Felix Sandstrom) (CAR)
2nd in wins, 2nd among starters in SV%, tied for the lead in GAA. Close between Lundqvist but Sandstrom faced a heavier workload.

2. Henrik Lundqvist (TB)
3. Calvin Pickard (MTL)

Selke
1. Eric Staal (CAR)
Lead forwards in hits and takeaways while winning 64% of face-offs.

2. Michael Dal Colle (NYR)
3. Steven Shipley (NSH)

Calder
1. Michael McLeod (FLA)
Rookie leader in points while playing a complete game and a key role (18 minutes/night) on a good team.

2. Jack Hughes (PIT)
3. Kaapo Kakko (SJ)

John Bucyk Trophy - German Rubtsov (NYI), Adrian Kempe (MIN), Matthew Murphy (COL). Figure Murphy's too old for a Calder.
Bob Probert Award - Marat Urakcheyev (ARI), David Cotton (PIT), Dustin Brown (LA). Not voting for guys who didn't actually win fights. HM to Connor Brickley who was ~PPG and won 6/8 fights.
Lady Byng Trophy - Jonathon Blum (CHI), Auston Matthews (CGY), Thomas Novak (NYR). Not much to choose between these three but Blum played more minutes as a D.
James Norris Trophy - Oliver Ekman-Larsson (ARI), Alex Pietrangelo (WPG/CHI), Adam Larsson (NSH). All high-scoring with great defensive counting stats. Pietrangelo fights (and loses) way too much.
Hart Memorial Trophy - Oliver Ekman-Larsson (ARI), Jonathon Toews (DET), Eric Staal (CAR). OEL dragged his team to the playoffs; Toews did everything he could, and Staal dominated all-around but had more help with a higher-scoring teammate.
Vezina Trophy - John Gibson (FLA), Henrik Lundqvist (TB), Calvin Pickard (MTL). Pretty close between these three and Sandstrom, but I think Gibson had the least to work with.
Selke Trophy - Eric Staal (CAR), Anze Kopitar (SJ), David Cotton (PIT). Staal's the runaway winner, but with no rule against homer picks, Kopitar's T-G and 56.6% FO deserve second over any power forward winger.
Calder Memorial Trophy - Michael McLeod (FLA), Timothy Liljegren (NYR), Andrei Svechnikov (ARI). McLeod's the clear winner.
Jack Adams Award - Jere Lehtinen/Brett Hull (DAL), Robert Svehla/Robert Pulford? (FLA), Ken Holland/Empty Void (STL). One point off the President's Trophy in the toughest division in the West; three points off the division lead in the toughest division despite a carousel of GMs; squeaking into the playoffs under the leadership of Empty Void and a young franchise defenseman who was -36.
Conn Smythe Trophy - Evgeni Malkin (DAL), Cam Fowler (TB), Joel Armia (DAL). I really wanted to vote Jonathon Blum for his 17 points and +9 in 15 games as a defenseman, but he didn't make it to the big show.

I was supposed to take over, but I found other things to do and compiling the list and collecting ballots was a pain. Public voting sounds fine to me.

Also a gentle reminder that all of these awards except for the Conn Smythe are regular season only, so try to limit your hindsight and ignore those playoff stats.
