Draft Preview

The Anaheim Ducks begin this 2016 draft with 7 picks to fill the prospect pool of the team. Here's take a look to those draft picks:

1st round, 23rd overall (From Dallas)
2nd round, 45th overall
2nd round, 59th overall (From NYR)
3rd round, 83rd overall (From Dallas)
3rd round, 88th overall (From Arizona)
5th round, 143rd overall (From Dallas)
6th round, 165th overall
7th round, 195th overall

As we can see, the Ducks doesn't have their own 1st pick. They traded him to Philadelphia in exchange of offensive d-man Cody Ceci early in the last season. Also, they won't draft in 4th round. Here's a look of the interview with General manager of the team, Jonathan Tremblay.
Joe, what are your thought of this year draft prospect?
Well, there's a lot of talent in the 1st round. It's certain that the draft is not as deep than last year. We won't see a lot of good player drafted in the bottom of 2nd round. Compared to last year we drafted Roope Hintz and Ryan Groop in the end of the 2nd round and players like them will be selected in early 2nd round this year. But, we think our scout did a good job and we will probably be able to selects good players.
Have you tried to moved up in the 1st round?
I think every General Manager try to move up at the moment but the price is really high. We talked to some GM but no offer is on the table right now. We wan't to move up but we don't want to send our core players to accomplish a trade. If i have a possibility to trade and the offer can improve our team, we will make a deal.
What about Brent Burns, there's a lot of speculation saying he will be gone before the draft. Is that true?
Brent Burns is an all around player in this league so why should I trade him man?!? Stupid speculation and stupid question!
What are the need in your team, forward or d-man?
I think we have some good prospects right now in our bank. I have a list and we will pick the best player available on this list. We don't care if it's a d-man or a forward, we will pick the best player available.

Draft review

Round 1

Brett Howden, C/LW, 23rd overall
Image
Brett Howden's career
----------
2015-16 Moose Jaw Warriors WHL 75 57 37 94 57 35

Scouting notes:

Brett Howden is an all-around forward but we could consider him more as a Power Forward. Brett is known for his ability to be really good on checking and hitting. In his zone, he is always at the right place to cut off opponent's play. He as a below average attack skills. He will probably hit 35 to 45 points a season on a 2nd line. On the middle, he will win more faceoff than he could lost.He also has a decnt skating ability. He already is a leader on the ice even if he is 17 years old. We could compare his style of play to Wojtek Wolski who's playing with the Chicago Blackhawks or even Logan Couture from the Winnipeg Jets. Brett will start the season in AHL at the beginning of the season, and we should see him play in the big league in 1 year. He sould be able to hit a 2nd line role in the future. He is the little brother of Quinton Howden.

Round 2

Max Gerlach, C/RW, 45th overall
Image
Max Gerlach's career
----------
2015-16 Medicine Hat Tigers WHL 75 24 30 54 57 37

Scouting notes:

Max is a natural sniper who could scores a lot of goals in this league. He is not known to be a great passer but have some skills with his stick. Defensively, he got a decent checking ability but won't hit his opponent because of his small size. He has a good positioning that helps him to be at the right place in his zone and to be at the right spot when time to take a shoot on goals. He will be an average skater and faceoff man. He will likely be a winger. We could compare his style of play to Brock Nelson from the Florida Panthers. Max will start the season in Junior but will be to pro training camp. We will probably see him in 2 or 3 years. He will fight for a spot on a 1st line RW in the future.

William Bitten, C/RW, 59th overall
Image
William Bitten's career
----------
2015-16 Plymouth Whalers OHL 59 62 32 94 15 34

Scouting notes:

Will is an all around offensive player. He can pass, be great with his stick but the essential strength of his game is his shot. He can scores goals from anywhere. On the middle he is really good on faceoffs. He is a good skater. His weaknesses are his defensive play on the ice and his lack of consistency. We can compare him to Phil Kessels from the Calgary Flames. He will go work his weaknesses in junior for maybe 2 more years before seeing him in AHL. If he developp well, he could be a 1st line center but he will take a lot of time. He is what we called a ''project''.

Round 3

Frédérick Allard, D, 64th overall
Image
Frédérick Allard's career
----------
2015-16 Chicoutimi Saguenéens QMJHL 60 22 23 45 42 36

Scouting notes:

Frédérick Allard is a defensive d-man that we can consider as an offensive d-man. He has a decent shot, a great first pass and some stick ability. In his zone, he his reliable without being too dominant. He has a decent skating ability. His weaknesses are his lack of consistency. He could be a good leader in this league. In the future he will fight for a 5th-6th role d-man with some chance to play on powerplay unit. We can compare him to Nicolas Brouillard from the Ottawa Senators. He will finish his Junior development before coming to pro level.

Ilya Karpukhin, D, 88th overall

Ilya Karpukhin's career
----------
2015-16 Mechel Tsheljabinsk RUS 59 6 18 24 24 32

Scouting notes:

Ilya is a guess. Some scout say he will never play next level and others say he will be a prolific d-man. It's why to descripe what are his strengths and weaknesses. We will give him a contract and see if his potential will grow.

Round 5

Hudson Elynuik, LW/C, 143rd overall
Image
Hudson Elynuik's career
----------

2015-16 Spokane Chiefs WHL 54 24 19 43 78 39

Scouting notes:
Hudson is a two-way forward. He has a good size that helps him to be good on cheking and give good bodycheck. He will certainly have a spot on a 4th line on next level. He will play all his junior's years before coming to pro level. He is a similar player of Trent Hunter.

Round 6

Matteo Gennaro, C/LW, 165th overall
Image
Matteo Gennaro's career
----------

2015-16 Calgary Hitmen WHL 77 25 44 69 34 39

Scouting notes:

Matteo will be a 4th liner in next level. He god some good defensive upside. He were really happy to see him available in round 6. He will finish his junior stage before having a year or 2 in AHL.

Round 7

Marshall Rifai, D, 195th overall
Image

Scouting notes:

Marshall will be an offensive al star-d-man in AHL. We will never see him in NHL.

Draft Review

Round 1

Michael Rasmussen, C/LW, 13th overall
Image
Michael Rasmussen's career
----------
2016-17 Acadie-Bathurst Titans QMJHL 76 73 95 168 30 32

Scouting notes: Michael Rasmussen is an all around forward but we could consider him more as a Power Forward. Michael is really good at hitting his opponents. He is an elite faceoff winner. On offense, he has a fair shot and stickhandling ability. He doesn't have a good passing vision but we didn't draft him for this aspect of the game. He already got a good strengh for a guy of this age. He is also imposing with his 6'6" shape. He has a comparable game with Brett Howden. We hope he will developp fast to be part of the pro team by the end of the season this year.

Round 2

Vladislav Kara, C/LW, 59th overall
Image
Vladislav Kara's career
----------
2016-17 Revier Lowen Oberhausen GER 58 27 22 49 23 35

Scouting notes: Nothing really interesting to say about Kara as we didn't want to draft him at all. There was an error on our list. After the draft, we fired our stupid staff member who put his name on our list. We will probably never see him in the big leagues, he will be forever tagged as a minor player.

Round 3

Jack Studnicka, C/RW, 89th overall
Image
Jack Studnicka's career
----------
2016-17 CSKA Moscow RUS 55 28 24 52 26 22

Scouting notes: Jack was drafted in 3rd round because of his faceoff ability. He is an all around forward with a decent pass and positionning. He has an NHL skating ability. He will play on a 4th line in the NHL. It will probably take a few years before seeing him around the big club.

Round 4

Reilly Walsh, D, 119th overall
Image
Reilly Walsh's career
----------
2016-17 Rimouski Oceanic QMJHL 75 9 22 31 41 39

Scouting notes: Reilly Walsh will be a future elite D-man in......the AHL. Don't thing he has the caliber to play in the big leagues.
