With the NHL trade deadline 17 days away, the Capitals are in a precarious position. They have to decide if they want to stand pat and go with what brought them to the dance, or do they want to try and "load up" and bring in some more high end talent. As things stand as of this writing, the Capitals are tied with the Bruins for the final wild card spot in the East with 61 points. However, the Islanders who have 3 games in hand, also have 61 points. The Capitals have 29 wins, while Boston has 28 and the Isles have 27. The Capitals have made 3 deals since the new GM took over. He wanted to make a few tweaks to the line-up and here was the first one.

To Chicago: 2017 4th round pick
To Washington: D Yann Sauve 67 CON

This was a relatively small move, but it was a move to get where the new management team wants on the ice and that is some more hitting on the backend. Sauve has 1 more year on his current contract and at making a paltry one million dollars, it was worth the risk to bring him in.

The 2nd move was also the 2nd move of the day and it was a bit more impactful then the first.

To Calgary: David Booth (75)
To Washington: Josh Bailey (74), Colby Armstrong (68), LA's 3rd round pick in 2018

This was a move in which Washington moved out an older, but still effective player on a longer term deal for a late 20's playmaker who can skate and play a bit better then average defense on a cheap deal and a player who is in his mid 30's, but is on the last year of his contract, but is a banger who can put the puck in the net at times. If things don't work out with Armstrong, they can move on and go in a cheap direction, but they will still have the value of Bailey ( who's currently the 2nd line center). The move gave the Capitals some more depth and it allows them to have some more versatility in line combinations.

The final deal was one that should benefit both teams now and in the future. It is more of a risk for the Capitals, depending on the play of Labate.

To Montreal Canadiens:
C Thomas Novak (76)
2017 ARI 1st
2018 L.A 3rd

To Washington Capitals:
L Joseph Labate (80)
D Damir Galin (65)

The Canadiens are starting to build towards next season and beyond and picking up a future top 6 forward in Novak and a late 1st round pick is a good start. From the Caps POV, Labate can play anywhere from the top to 4th line and doesn't shy away from using the body. He also still has 2 years left after this on his contract and at a good cap hit. Will be close to entering the prime of his career when this deal expires. Galin is the wild card in this whole shebang. He brings size (6'4" 224 lbs) and a high hitting rating (97) to a team that needs to get bigger and nastier. Still young at only 23 and on the last year of his entry deal, Galin shouldn't cost too much to lock up for a long time.

Trade deadline news:
After receiving several offers for Zach Parise, the team decided to keep him as they felt the offers weren't strong enough. "Zach is top 10 in goals and points, but teams were only willing to pay 40-50 cents on the dollar at best for him", said the GM. "If there was an offer that was good enough to entice us, we would've asked Zach if he wanted to stay or move-on". With the trade deadline passed, the Capitals did make 2 moves. The first was with Edmonton for the following:

To Washington
Daniel Gunnarsson(91)
EDM 2nd 2017
EDM 3rd 2018

To Edmonton
Joel Armia(84)[/quote]

The Capitals wanted to get another top 4 defenseman and in trading away Joel Armia, they feel that they did so in getting back Daniel Gunnarsson in return. Daniel isn't going to bring that much offense to the table, but he is an above average defender and that is what the team has been lacking this season. The 2nd round pick this year was an important part of the trade as it gives them 2 seconds and they could use them to possibly move up in the 1st round.

To Calgary:
Hofmann (76)
5th WSH 2017
for
To Washington:
Okposo (75)

This was a deal simply made because Hofmann is due for a nice raise and Okposo is basically the same player, but at a cheaper option. The team has said that if Hofmann becomes a UFA, then they would love to have him back.
