Entry Draft

Post by Admin »

A. Draft Structure

The EHEC Entry Draft consists of 5 rounds and otherwise closely follows the rules of the NHL draft*. The order of draft picks is determined as follows:

29-30 - Stanley Cup Winner and Runner Up
27-28: Conference Finals Runners Up (by reverse order of regular season ranking)
15-26: Remaining Playoff Teams (by reverse order of regular season ranking)*
1-14: Non-playoff teams (by reverse order of regular season ranking, and modified by the lottery in the first round; see Section C).

B. Eligibility
As per EHM rules, all players who will be over 18 years old on or before September 15 and under 21 are eligible for selection (so unlike the NHL draft, every player is eligible for three drafts, 20-year-olds can be eligible, and there is no separate rule for non-North Americans). Players who are not selected in their final year of eligibility immediately become unrestricted free agents.

C. Draft Lottery
Teams that are excluded from the EHEC playoffs enter the Draft Lottery. The draft lottery results are determined using an online random number generator and following the rules and odds of the 2016 NHL draft (table here). Draft lottery results only apply to the first round. All subsequent rounds will follow the final standings, including the playoffs.

D. Drafting Method and Rules
The following time limits must be respected between each draft selection:
1-2 = 12 hours
3-4 = 8 hours
5-7 = 6 hours

The league suggests sending a shortlist via PM in case you cannot make your selection within the time limit. Shortlists with specific players are preferred, but requests with reasonable criteria may also be accepted. If you fail to submit a pick, the next best skater according to The EHEC final draft rankings will be selected on your behalf. Any GM may post the auto-pick, but please take care to ensure that the highest available skater is chosen.

Teams who have their pick timed out will have their subsequent picks auto-selected until informed otherwise. When a draft pick is traded, the applicable time limit is reset from the time that the trade ruling is posted. A separate thread for each round will be posted in the appropriate EHEC Entry Draft forum, with previous rounds' results also listed in the first post for reference.

* note: the NHL has more complicated rules for the draft order for playoff teams that did not make the conference finals, based on their results in previous seasons and whether they were regular season division winners. These were historically not followed, partly out of ignorance and because they're unnecessarily complicated, and will not be going forward since division winners are largely symbolic.

I expanded on and clarified some of the rules, for future reference.

I added sections on the draft order and lottery, which I think were clarified in previous draft announcement threads but never made it to the rulebook.
