An award has been determined in the Michal Neuvirth arbitration.

WSH comps: Crawford, Peters; 900k for 2 years
Arbitrator comps: Howard, Quick

Neuvirth is a tweener who may have a ceiling as a backup goaltender, but is likely just going to be an AHL starter.

He has mostly reached his ceiling in everything but LE and strength, and thus is what he is. With his 60 CON, it is tough to envision him playing frequently in the NHL.

As a result, my arbitrator proposed 950k for 2 years to give a potential middle ground number of 925k.

But, I'm going to just put him at 950k in case he is used in the NHL. He is good enough attribute wise, probably not good enough CON wise.

Tim, you can accept/reject Michal Neuvirth at 950k for 2 years.

An award has been determined in the Braden Holtby arb.

WSH comps: Neuvirth, Bishop, Quick; proposed 1.1M per 2 years + TO
Arbitrator comps: same

My arbitrator argues that Holtby is better than both Montoya and Neuvirth, which is true, and they are both NHL backups making 950k.

Holtby has the potential to be a 1b starter in the league, but his 68 CON leaves something to be desired. My arbitrator proposed 1.55M per, which might be a little high, but notes that it is lower than the award he gave Bishop before I middled it.

I think, in this case, a solid 1.5M on the AHL max is a good award for Holtby. Depending on how he progresses, he should get out of the AHL and be a serviceable backup, if not a starter for a weaker team.

Tim, you can accept/reject Braden Holtby at 1.5M for 2 + TO.

Try 850K (what he's asking for in-game) for 3 years, two-way with a team option?

And yes - $4.004166M for Barker is fine.

Andrei Plekhanov has signed a $1,000,000 per year, 1 year deal with the Washington Capitals. Detailed terms of the deal were not announced.

Parshin is asking for 850k per for 4 years and a year's supply of blowjobs from an Eastern European hooker.

Awards have been determined in the JP Dumont, Jarret Stoll, Olli Jokinen, and Semyon Varlamov arbitrations.

Dumont
Terms: 1 yr + TO
GM proposal: 3.35M per; comps: Koivu, Hejduk, Sturm
Agent proposal: 3.25M per; comps: Sturm, Williams, Kariya

The agent would have accepted the GM's terms prior to this case going to arbitration.

Therefore, I award Dumont the GM's proposed $3,350,000 for the 2012-13 season with a team option for a second year.

Stoll
Terms: 3 yrs + TO
GM proposal: 3.06M per; comps: Boyle, Stajan, Higgins, Korpikoski
Agent proposal: 3,333,333 per; comps: Vermette, Ryan, Bergeron, Higgins

Both parties agree in this case that Stoll's real life salary is an overpayment compared to what he brings to the table in EHEC. Stoll did greatly outproduce everyone but Korpikoski in the GMs comps. With such a small range here, not much discussion needs to be had regarding Stoll's ability. Stoll's agents did express their willingness to take a pay cut due to the Capitals willing to make a longer term commitment to them than they had originally thought.

Stoll has twice been a 25-goal scorer in EHEC while having just 73 OF and has a pretty decent LE for a player of his age.

I award Jarret Stoll $3,250,000 for the next three seasons with an option for a fourth.

Jokinen
Terms: 1 yr + PO
GM proposal: 4.3M per; comps: Gagne, Tanguay, Roy, Frolov
Agent proposal: 5.15M per; comps: Elias, Sedin x 2, Gagne, Havlat

Ah, the curious case of Olli Jokinen. The overpaid veteran centerman who missed two months due to injury saw his production drop as he went from .95 PPG in 2010-11 to just .72 PPG in 2011-12. Last year, in arbitration, Simon Gagne received a 4.6M award and both GM and agent used him as a comp in this case. Jokinen's versatility is something to consider in this case because he has enough defensive ability to play on any line and be a contributing player.

Both the GM and the agent understand that Jokinen is not a 5.5M player any longer. The agent expressed his appreciation for the player option because he believes that Jokinen would get more on the open market than he will in arbitration and that he could have a bounceback season and earn more money next summer.

If we project Jokinen's point totals to 82 games, he'd have 59-60 points, with 30-31 goals. Surprisingly, even in the defensive-minded EHEC, 38 players notched the 30-goal plateau this season. Jokinen has surprisingly low leadership qualities for his age and experience and that's something to consider as we've weighed heavily on leadership in arbitration cases with older players.

I award Olli Jokinen $4,750,000 for one season with the player option. This salary gives Jokinen a chance to redeem himself and his representation's appreciation for the player option makes them okay with this number.

Varlamov
Terms: 2 yrs + TO
GM proposal: 4.3215M per; comps: Mason, Nabokov, Bryzgalov
Agent proposal: 6M per; comps: Lundqvist, Brodeur, Miller, Kiprusoff

Wow. A huge range in this case. Last year, Varlamov was signed via arbitration to a one-year deal as GM Gaw wanted to see how he would do in 2011-12 after struggling in the playoffs during the first two seasons of EHEC. He certainly wasn't bad in the playoffs this season, dropping to a 2.32 GAA after the previous year's 3.25 and the year before that's 4.02.

In the regular season, Varlamov was a beast, finishing with the best GAA of goaltenders who played more than 35 games and also the top save percentage in the 35+ game group. His 1.80 GAA was the only one of the regular starters to be under 2.00. He rattled off his third straight 40 win season and could be voted as the league's Vezina Trophy winner.

The issue with Varlamov is how to compensate his 72 CON. It is by no means elite and CON is clearly one of the most important goaltender attributes. Varlamov's LE is also just 53. The three Stanley Cup winners have had CON/LE of 83/89, 81/72, and 85/73. With that in mind, it's really hard to consider Varlamov an elite goaltender because he's just 1-3 in playoff series through the first three years of EHEC, leadership develops slowly, and CON doesn't change.

I'm inclined to go on the lower end in this case because of those factors, though slightly higher than the other comps for Varlamov's regular season success.

I award Semyon Varlamov $4,750,000 for the next two years with a team option to see if it is possible for a mid 50's LE, low 70s CON goaltender to have sustained playoff success.

Tim, you can accept/reject these awards.
