OTTAWA CITIZEN

Post by SensGM »

GOOD START FOR THE SENS

After 15 games of the rregular season, the Sens sit at the top of league, sharing the lead with their longtime rival Canadiens.
While the 4th line performaces seem disappointing so far, the young star Valeri Nichushkin (9-11-20) is RED HOT, being in the top-10 leaders in goals, assists and points.

"We're talking about solutions to get our 4th line better. We get the chance to have cap room available so I'm working on it."

Finally, backup goalie Jonas Gustavsson, who has poor numbers so far, will also have to step up in order to stay in the team.

2021 DRAFT REPORT

Cole Sillinger (C/L) - 1st rd, #14
With their first selection, the Sens didn't seem picking the most talented prospect available but they bring a complete forward with tons of leadership.

Corson Ceulemans (D) - 2nd rd, #33
Quite a surprise here since he wasn't projected to be selected before the 3rd round. Yet the Sens sees a future top-4 defensemen if the work ethic is there.

William Strömgren (L/R) - 2nd rd, #49
Like Ceulemans, high expectations again. Willy could turn into a great all-around forward

Tyson Kozak (C/L) - 3rd rd, #88
PK specialist with awesome face-offs ability.

Manix Landry (C/R) - 4th rd, #98
A long shot prospect who's projected to be a bottom-6 forward.

LET'S GET IT STARTED

The Sens all gather at the traditional golf tournament which somehow starts the preseason.

The GM has been really active during the summer while signing UFAs at key positions like Oscar Dansk, Ryan Kesler, Joe Colborne and Gustav Forsling.
A lot of veterans have also been signed to play in AHL and support prospects in their development. We've been told that the 1st selection of the 2021 EHEC draft Cole Sillinger is expected to play for the baby Sens this season.

There's still couple of spots to fill in the pro team and the preseason will help the GM to take the appropriate decisions.
''We've added a lot of players able to play a key role on the bottom-6. The competition at the camp will be very interesting and we're looking forward to it.
We did an offer to the RFA Kirill Marchenko because we feel he could be a great candidate to fill one of the spots. There's a tiny chance he could sign with us but it worth the shot.''

The Sens also made the announcement that Ryan Kesler, Cody Hodgson and Noah Hanifin will be the alternate captains to Connor McDavid.

Finally, the Sens started the preseason with a 3-1 loss at the MSG while the only veteran on the ice was Jacob Middleton.

Cole Sillinger set to make his EHEC debut tonight vs the Habs.

The Sens management has decided to callup Coke Sillinger after Crouse got a 25 games suspension due to his illegal hit on Ryan Ellis last night.
He’s expected to join the team in Ottawa in the afternoon.
Jaroslav Halak will have the start.

TRADE DEADLINE - A BUSY DAY AT THE OFFICE

After acquiring Nathan Horton from the NY Rangers a couple of weeks ago, the Senators GM have been waiting to the deadline to make nothing less than 5 trades for the cup run!

First, he finally acquired a goaltender by trading a 3rd pick to San Jose to bring Chet Pickard.
« We were not satisfied with our both goalies’ performances so I had to do something to hopefully fix the problem »

Then, he acquired the veteran dman Joni Pitkanen from Arizona in return of Gustav Forsling and a fifth to add « stability on the 3rd pair and some leadership in the locker room. »

Few hours later, Jimmy Lodge was added to bring leadership and more consistency on the 4th line. The Rangers got a couple of 3rd picks in return.

A surprising move saw Kesler heading to New Jersey in return of Logan Couture.
« We feel that Couture will be a better fit than Ryan. With this addition, we expect to be better on the PK as well. »
Few picks have been sent to New Jersey in return.

Finally, in the last hour, the Senators agreed with the Panthers to trade Devante Stephens, Connor Timmins and a 3rd pick in 2023 in return of Libor Hajek.
« Hajek is a slight upgrade on Devante by bringing more consistency and leadership. We think he will be a great fit to Pitkanen ».

SEASON PREVIEW

Following a disappointing final conference elimination, many important decisions awaited the GM regarding the players whose contracts were expiring.
While it was expected that several of them would not be back with the team, the future remained undecided for others.
GM Marty was also very active in the free agent market, signing more than 15 players.

OFFENSE
OUT: Horton, Crouse, Brown, Pavelski, Lodge, Couture, Kartayev, Tangradi, Livingston, Korneev, Klingberg
IN: Zharkov, Buchnevich, Labate, Colborne, Toffoli, Jeffrey, Voracek, Budish
Lots of veterans didn't get offered a new contract for cap purposes while Crouse received an offer sheet that Ottawa decided not to match.
Nevertheless, The Sens remain an offensive threat led by McDavid, Hodgson and Strome.
Rating: A-

DEFENSE
OUT: Pitkanen, Cohen, Middleton, Girardi
IN: Boqvist, Pulock, Davidson, Staal, Summers, DeAngelo, Shattenkirk
The loss of both Cohen and Middleton should hurt but we're hoping the new additions will step up in the wake of Hanifin and Lee.
Rating: B-

BETWEEN THE PIPES
OUT: Halak, Gustavsson, Pickard, Dansk
IN: Dubnyk, Wells, Stolarz, Gillies
Failing to have a real #1 goalkeeper, Dubnyk and Wells form a good tandem on which the Sens can count.
Rating: B-

EXPECTATIONS
Northeast Division: 2nd
Eastern Conference: 4th
The Sens look not as strong as last season, but with a lot cap space available, they could be a major player as the trade deadline approaches.

PROSPECT RANKING

1- Cole Sillinger (#14 - 2021)
Barely 19 years old, he already played a playoff game last season against Montreal.
A born leader, Cole has great offensive skills and we're confident he'll become an excellent two-way center.

2- Adam Boqvist (#18 - 2018)
Very skilled and fast offensive-minded defenseman, Boqvist has the potential to become a top-4 while being a constant threat on the power play.
He still has to find the perfect fit in order to develop his game.

3- Corson Ceulemans (#33 - 2021)
Once considered a longshot, he has already exceeded expectations on its progression curve.
If he continues that way, he should become an excellent 2-way defender capable of playing on top pair. We should see him A LOT with the Baby Sens.

4- William Strömgren (#49 - 2021)
At his first training camp (he was not present last year), William has already confirmed all the potential that we had detected in him.
This big 2-way winger might turn into a great top-9 for the club.
He will play in his country this year.

5- Rodwin Dionicio (#106 - 2022)
A big body with a decent work ethic, he has the profile of a typical shutdown defender. They'll love him in Binghampton.

6- Viktor Neuchev (#110 - 2022)
Our scout in Russia held him in high regard and pushed hard to draft this big centerman, who could be the hidden card of the draft's end. Very gifted offensively, he is already compared to Pavel Datsyuk.

7- Jordan Dumais (#144 - 2022)
A small pocket winger, Jordan is a very fiery forward with a fine offensive touch.
Unless there is a big surprise, he will fill the future in Binghampton.
