Biggest Training Camp Successes Across the League

Post by DevilsGM »

Training camp is a huge part of prospect development. In 2018 we have some pretty major improvements which I will highlight below for each team.

Terminology
YO: Years Old
Skill Attributes (SA): SH, PL, ST, CH, PO, HI, SK, FA, SR
PP: Passing Plays
OD: Overdevelopment

There would be a lot of goalies on this list as goalies develop super quickly apparently (top 11 growers were goalies), so if the goalie doesn't have NHL potential I will likely look past them for other talent. A general cutoff of +3 SA was set as well as backup/3rd pairing/4th line potential.

Link to Data: Link

Northeast Division
Buffalo Sabres: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, 19.6 YO, +78 SA, UPL saw major growth across the board excluding strength and is closer then ever to establishing himself as an NHL starter. He will likely see starting AHL minutes to continue his development.
Boston Bruins: Mitchell Gibson, 19.3 YO, +32 SA. Not the guy with the greatest ceilings, but is growing fast and could cement himself as a steady NHL backup.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Jett Woo, 18.2 YO, +10 SA. Woo has a way to go, but should round out to a solid two way passing plays style of defenseman. Excluded: Evan Cormier, 20.9 YO, +45 SA
Ottawa Senators: Valeri Nichushkin, 23.6 YO, +6. Thats right, one fo the best wingers in the game got even better with a noticeable +4 boost to his skating ability.
Montreal Canadiens: With 4 young goalies Montreal had a lot of development. Skinner is likely the best of the bunch at Just 19.9 YO and a +24 SA and solid backup potential. WIth that said, centerman Alexander Khovanov made huge strides in his strength and checking ablitly (+8/+12, +20 total) Khovanov has middle 6 offensive center potential.

Atlantic Division
Pittsburgh Penguins: Jacob Olofsson, 18.6 YO, +4 SA. Its tough to crack the NHL as a center, but Oloffson looks to have that ability and could work out to be a bottom for center or perhaps a middle 6 winger.
Philadelphia Flyers: Lawson Crouse, 21.3 YO, +5 between SK and FA. Some of that won't be too valuable given he can't play center but on the bright side the +2 to his skating is betterthan a kick in the butt.
New Jersey Devils: Jake Oettinger, 19.8 YO, +97. Leading the entire league in terms of training camp development, Oettinger could make a case for starting the season with the Devils. Oettinger still has a long way to go in terms of strength however to keep people out of the crease.
New York Rangers: Jonah Gadjovich, 20.0 YO, +17. WIth development across the board Gadjovich is well on his way to cracking the NHL. 1 year in the AHL will likely be all he needs. Longeterm he has 2nd line potential.
New York Islanders: German Rubtsov, 20.3 YO, +6. Rubstov is young but already at the point where he only has to round out his game to reach all his ceilings. Unfortunately at 73 POT he won't OD at all, but his ceilings are magically high and he has already established himself as a #1 PP center.

Southeast Division
Carolina Hurricanes: Adam Brizgala, 20.3 YO, +42. Constistancy isn't his name, but an elite skillset is. At worst he should be a backup. At best he could establish himself as an elite starter if he is somehow able to magicially play more consistantly than his CON would dictate.
Washington Capitals: Lias Andersson, 20 YO, +9. Unfortunately he didn't get stronger which is the only real area of his game that is lacking. Already an NHL center, he could work his way up to being a middle 6 option if he hits the gym.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Ty Ronning, 20.9 YO, +6. Ronning is probably the most interesting guy in this list. He has the potential to be a 3rd liner at the NHL level as a HAGer, but is so damned far away that there is some uncertainty if he can get to that level with only 2 prime years of development left.
Columbus Blue Jackets:
Florida Panthers: Olle Eriksson, 19.3 YO, +26. Another goalie with backup potential. More noteable is potential 1st line winger Oliver Wahlstrom who had +11 SA at 18.3 YO. THere is still a long way to go, but he has time.

NorthwestDivision
Colorado Avalanche: Mackenzie Entwistle, 19.2 YO, +21 SA (+7 HI). He could make a push for NHL time as early as this year. Top 6 HAG upside down the line with great PK potential.
Calgary Flames: Kirill Marchenko, 18.2 YO, +17 SA. Big boom or bust guy with multiple years to go, but he is off to a good start to developing into a top 6 winger.
Vancouver Canucks: Jakub Zboril, 21.6 YO, +9 SA, already a top pairing defender, Zboril is pushing for that #1 defender status.
Minnesota Wild: Mitchell Mattson, 20.7 YO, +6 , top line center just getting better.
Edmonton Oilers: Casey Mittelstadt, 19.9 YO, +6, 2nd C potential.

Central Division
Winnipeg Jets: Nate Schnarr, 19.3 YO, +8 SA (+6 SK). 1 or 2 years developing in the AHL is needed. Tops out as 4th line defensive centerman.
Chicago Blackhawks: None.
St. Louis Blues: Olli Juolevi, 20.4 YO, +12. Top pairing defender with #1D potential and 1st powerplay/PK ability.
Nashville Predators: Colin White, 21.7 YO, +10. Largely ST improvement (+7). Middle 6 HAG C ability which he is rounding out now. Lots of OD potential.
Detroit Red Wings: Adam Boqvist, 18.1 YO, +5. 1st pairing PP potential, but one of those boom or bust guys given how far away he is to that ceiling. Needs to be the underager for Detroit if he hasn't been set as that already.

Pacific Division
San Jose Sharks: Brady Tkachuk, 19.0 YO, +15 SA. Boom/Bust top 6 HAG winger. Extremely strong for his age (71) so while his other attributes are far from the ceilings I'm inclined to believe he'll get there.
Arizona Coyotes: None
Los Angeles Kings: Jesper Eliasson, 18.5 YO, + 18. Backup potential, although some may see a starter in him given his consistancy. Its going to take awhile though.
Dallas Stars: Alexander Henriksson, 23.6 YO, +8. Half ST (+4). Only 4th winger potential though.
Anaheim Ducks: Ty Emberson, 18.4 YO, +16. Already maxing out his hitting. 2nd Pairing HAG in a couple of years.

Tkachuk's only gonna be busting three things: his butt, your player's skulls, and the puck top corner past your crying goalies.
