Pittsburgh / Ottawa

Post by PittsburghGM »

to Pittsburgh
D - Dion Phaneuf (84)
C - Laurent Dauphin (51)
D - Nikolas Brouillard (68)
2019 OTT 1st (#2 overall)
2019 NYI 1st (#10 overall)

to Ottawa
L/C - Cody Hodgson (81)
2019 PIT 1st (#9 overall)
2021 PIT 1st

I received a lot of interest in Hodgson and some very serious offers, and thanks to those teams for the offers and discussions. I also wasn't even sure I wanted to trade him when I first took over, and am kind of hesitant to make such a big move being new to the league, but this deal makes too much sense for the direction I wanted to go in.

Ultimately, in the second overall pick, this gave me something that wasn't on the table anywhere else... Hodgson is a stud, but something on the level of this year's top two prospects is a piece that should end up almost as good as Hodgson, and I can build around that. Keeping a second pick in the top-10 was important to me and when we were able to make that aspect of the deal work, this became the one I wanted to go with.

Phaneuf's contract isn't a problem for us and he's still a very good defenseman who should have value if he's flipped, too. Dauphin is a solid, young two-way player who has put up pretty good numbers over his two years in the league. His consistency is low, but he's been able to produce pretty well anyway. Brouillard will be an affordable 24yo PP specialist, not great defensively, but should be valuable in a certain role.

I confirm.
Great talks with 3 GMs regarding the 2nd pick overall.
Even though he’s my best Dman, I needed to deal Phaneuf in the same trade to fix my cap issues AND get a top-6 forward for the upcoming seasons. I don’t know on what line he’s gonna land but Hodgson appeared to be the perfect fit for my Sens.
Other assets are thrown in in order to balance the whole package.

Thanks Trevor and GL with your Pens.

Approved.

Hodgson > #2 pick and Phaneuf >? 2021 1st - at least, this should give motivation for PIT to accelerate the rebuild.
