Have 5 goalies, 1 can go, 5th round pick is enough for AHL goalie.

I realize this is a nothing transaction but I do not understand the logic of trading for a goalie who was just about to go on waivers.

One possible reason would be, assuming he clears waivers, it would allow Columbus to put him in the AHL right at the start of the season (courtesy the Artemi Panarin rule) which they couldn't do if they claimed him.
But seeing as he only makes 50k more than Binnington and is a clear upgrade as the backup, I'm not guessing that was the plan.
