2020 Preseason

I advanced the file again. This time I removed all retiring tags and invited all prospects to camp. It seems like the game just signs them to 100k 1y contracts. I'm not sure if it does anything else special to send them back automatically but anyway if that doesn't happen I'll do it manually at the end of preseason. If you have an overwhelming number of prospects getting in the way of your line selections, feel free to send them to the farm since there are no preseason farm games.
The next file update will include adding the preseason schedule to the site (before the games start on Saturday). I may or may not sim every day or do batches of 2-3 days at once, since every team plays a regular schedule of one game every three days.
I have not entered pending staff requests but as far as I'm aware that's the only to-do item left. Let me know if there's anything else.

The game automatically sends invited prospects back to junior, so you won't have to worry about that

We can't call up every farm player for the pre season right? How many players need to be kept there to prevent a game crash?

How are there still teams with less than 30 contracts? That's crazy.
Morrissey was my one player still in the AHL so I'll have to send someone else down.

Bern's AHL team is mostly composed of fast-signs every year. Could say he's not exactly a details guy.
Philly's got 8 UFAs not included in the numbers so they're working their way up.

that is a patently absurd approach to development... then again, zero picks or prospects so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

For the new folks, Bern ran Pittsburgh back when they were a top team before taking a (brief) hiatus and coming back as Chicago.

I haven't entered a real schedule yet and anyway it doesn't matter, anyone who hasn't turned 20 by Sept. 15 is junior aged.

So, uh, if I have someone signed that turns 20 in October, can I not keep them in the NHL and then send them down in October, once they turn 20?

No, for consistency there is only one rule for determining whether a player is junior aged. Anyone born after September 15 is a junior player. You can keep them on your pro roster but they need an exemption to play on the farm no matter if they've turned 20 by October or not.
The same was true in previous seasons when the birthdate cutoff was December 31 but I neglected to enforce it under the assumption that people wouldn't keep a 19-year-old on their roster for three months just to send them down on January 1. Vik may have noticed a case or two like this.

Ugh, there goes my plan for Ellis this season then. There are so many tight restrictions in this league that make it hard to maneuver, some of them make sense, but this one doesn't to me. Even with the rule, the date should be the season opener, not halfway through preseason.

You can send them back to juniors at no penalty and their contracts will slide. There's basically no downside unless you really need them developed now.
Making the date the season opener would mean that the two weeks' worth of the oldest players in any given draft year would be AHL eligible one season sooner than the rest. It doesn't really make much sense and already made for weird arbitrage when it was 3.5 months worth of draftees in past seasons.

Ok, I updated the file but forgot to advance a day. There were many transactions and as happy as I was to see ~20 sets of lines uploaded, I'm going to wait until tomorrow night before simming the first two days of preseason. Plus I have to do the thing to get the preseason schedule to show up.
Since the file is advanced, you'll have to use these links to see previous season stats:
Pro stats,
farm stats,
playoff stats
At some point I'll put a season selector on those pages, but don't hold your breath, unless you're underwater.

Dustin Boyd and Justin Faulk were given contracts of 0 years. I'd argue that would be preferable to their actual contracts, but they should be for 1 year.
In the file, none of my changes seem to be entered, but it's all good in GMO. And I'm not seeing the new contracts on the site. That gonna be a problem?

Sigh. No idea what happened. I'm pretty sure I uploaded all of the files including players.ehm, but for whatever reason players.ehm seemed to get stuck on an older version. I suppose it's possible somebody opened GMO before I uploaded the changes and then overwrote them right afterwards. I probably need to figure out some way to disable GMO while I'm making file changes.
Unfortunately, this means that any changes to players.ehm entered from around 11:30 PM EST last night to ~2AM this morning are gone. Sorry. At least I actually advanced the file this time.

Day three is up on
the schedule, so every team has played a game now. Taylor Beck is the preseason hero so far. A lot of teams with auto'd lines are going to look unusually good throughout September, as usual.

Is there fantasy hockey in the preseason? Mika Zibanejad is paying dividends with 2G+2A+25PIM in 2GP.
On today's
schedule, you will find five new games, three of which were shutouts.

Pit traded a 5th for Zibanejad and now he's tops in the league. Is it too early to award the 2021 Best GM/Coach award to him?
Well, tops other than TAVARES, who is taking this opportunity to play against a bunch of teens and AHLers and dominate their faces off.

More games. The Bruins complete an exciting third period comeback and the Isles' Dustin Brown scores in OT, but the most exciting result is the Penguins scoring an equalizer with the goalie pulled, only to give up the winning goal the next shift.

Anyway,
more games are up. Nothing too exciting besides the bench-clearing brawl in which the Capitals go 3-1 in fight wins.

I wish the game tracked non-offsetting penalty minutes; it's such a pain trying to figure out how many goals an undisciplined player costs you by subtracting misconducts, fighting majors and offsetting roughing calls.

Also kind of hilarious how the fifth player on each team in a line brawl ends up with just offsetting roughing minors.
