The Islanders have been one of the teams that haven't had a lot of success. In all the years of the EHEC, only one season was considers a success, and into the playoffs for a short run they went. But that was a top heavy team led by Ovechkin, McDavid and others. It unfortunately wasn't sustainable. Now a revamp of the plan to get the Islanders and their long suffering fan base back into the playoffs.
In are vets Kari Lehtonen, Mike Green, Dustin Brown, Patrick Kane and MPS. Kane came over from the Sens in the McDavid deal that shocked the league last spring. Kane provides a scoring touch and should be reinvigorated playing with the likes of MPS and Rubstov who most in the league still don't know how he put up 88points last season.
Lehtonen provides a stable presence in net and should get the majority of the games after last seasons tandem fiasco with Wells and Tompkins. Tompkins we should note went on to sign in Dallas and is currently on their farm roster.
MPS returns to the team where he had 55 points for in 14/15. It would have been something to see his scoring touch with McDavid but playing with Rubstov should be just fine.
MPS takes over the top RW position from Filatov who was a long time Islander and fan favorite. He was moved for defenceman Bear and forward and new Captain Dustin Brown after last season ended.
With the addition of Bear and Green on the blueline the Islanders are hoping to get the puck up the ice cleaner and faster. With Werenski scoring the most of the back end last season their additions should lighten the load for Zach this season.
Also new to the team this year is rookie Matvi Guskov the young Russian can play center but we are most likely to see him on the wing. He's a hitter who will likely find a place on the 3rd of 4th line.
Head Coach Doug Weight, who is likely on the hot seat to have his team perform well early returns for his 4th season leading the bench.
