Flames finalize faction forthwith

Calgary, AB

The Calgary Flames trimmed their training camp roster down to 23 players on Sunday, with very few surprises from GM Marco Shane and coaching staff.

Newly signed veterans Riley Sheahan and Andreas Johnsson were sent to the AHL's Abbotsford Heat, along with 2019 draft selection Ryan Suzuki, as part of the U20 AHL rule.

"We see a lot of potential in Ryan," said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter, "he's fast, has good hands. At his position, he'd be struggling to get ice time with us. We all agreed it made sense for him to play in Abbotsford and play as much as he can. (In the AHL) he can learn the pro game, get stronger, learn the routines."

Dynamic center Auston Matthews had an impressive showing in training camp, and looks to build on that as a mainstay on the 1st line.

Other notable players making the big club are young forwards Tyson Jost and Kirill Marchenko as well as defenseman Julius Honka and goaltender Michael McNiven

"We had a bit of a battle going for the backup position," says Sutter, "and we wanted it that way. We have some good depth in net, and that was shown in training camp."
