2021 - Return or Rebuild?

GM Evanovich took over in the summer of 2019 and promised a rebuild over a few years. The team would get younger, faster, and be ready to compete against the leagues top teams. The ride that has followed took more twists and turns than bad city taxi ride.

After narrowly missing the playoffs (tied for 8th, but less regulation wins), the team and its fans had lost some patience for a multi-year rebuild and wanted to get back to glory if possible. The 2020 off season was designed to do that.

Jonathan Toews and Rick Nash's arrivals have already been talked about in previous posts. But they are both insanely talented and primed this team for success.

Then on the eave of UFA season, an unexpected opportunity presented itself. It cost NY a decent price but in return, one of the leagues best players is now in New York. And while Nash and Toews will continue to lead on in their 30s, Novak, Dal Colle, and Eichel are 23/24 year olds that could dominate for decades.

The UFA season then saw many small additions as Eichel placed the team up and slightly over cap compliance. Multiple veterans were brought in on cap-friendly, short term deals like Luca Caputi, Dan Hamhuis, and Andrea Meszaros. Also over this time the team made a few minor cap-related moves which has settled with a roster unrecognizable to last season's group.

Which means we end as the title suggests: Is 2021 the year the Rangers return to its 2014-2017 form? Or despite their efforts, was a long term rebuild always in the cards? As the preseason is now underway, it won't be long until we see it all play out on the rink.
