Game 5 and it's do or die for two teams. Which way will they vote?
Back in the nation's capital, the senators open the scoring in the first, with young Samuel Honzek's second of the playoffs. But just a minute later the Leafs answer back with Vlad Kartayev's own second of the playoffs. Corson "Shayne" Ceulemans provides the only goal of the second and the Leafs enter the second intermission needing to score at least two to stay alive. Unfortunately for Leafs fans, the Sens absolutely pile it on in the third, scoring 14 seconds in and adding three more insurance markers in the next 6 minutes. Rookie Carter George proves unable to stop the red and white machine and the Sens take the series in 5, to face...
... perhaps the Penguins, but the MSG faithful hope not. Their nervous cheers at puck drop prove fateful as Jack Hughes opens the scoring just 31 seconds in. Just like in the other game, though, Samuel Morin replies and the game is tied after one. Much like the other game, though, Andrei Svechnikov regains PIT their lead just a minute in, and Conor Geekie extends it further with his (surprisingly) first of the playoffs. But the Rangers storm back with Lundestrom's own first, and Matthews' fifth. And so we head to the third tied!
... but the Rangers unfortunately have their own collapse, giving up yet another first-minute-and change goal, while Svechnikov adds an insurance marker 4 minutes later. And lastly, Conor Geekie ices it with just over a minute to go. We'll be charitable and say Oettinger was headed for the bench and couldn't make it back in time. Anyway, there we have it, PIT takes the series over NYR 4-1 and the ECF will be the Ottawa Senators versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.
