No, nothing in rule-book. Fwiw, 10 sec shift lengths still equal 6-8 minutes of playing time depending on special teams. My 4th line minutes were 8:40, 8:20 and 12:40 (Halpern is on second PK unit). It's not like they morph into my 1st line after 10 seconds; they go out, and after the 10 seconds whenever they have a chance to change they do. If you look through some NHL box scores from tonight you'll see a majority of 4th line players playing around 8 minutes, some less then that. John Scott played 4:30.

But since some GMs are in favor of restricting more and more things, I'm sure you could convince enough people to make a stink about this to.

During last's year's CBA discussion, I did say 20 sec: viewtopic.php?p=23910#p23910

But, it's not in the Rulebook and shit is spread out all over the place, so that's my problem and not yours. As of now.

okay, now i am really thinking about the DAL-VAN tilt last night and i am fascinated by the evening of Guillaume Latendresse. let's reconstruct this for a mental picture.

first he goes out there and does something to Luca Caputi which puts him on the shelf for five months. ouch. for which he receives a 5 minute major at the 41:14 mark . his penalty ends at the 46:14 mark; according to the game log, the coach obviously sent him right back out on the ice on the next shift because the brawl came at just 47:52.

it was at this point where Alex Plante (probably on orders) had to start it up with Guillaume to get even for Caputi. Unfortunately, Guillaume promptly caved Caputi's face in for his efforts ("Guillaume Latendresse beat Alex Plante in a fight") and to top it off, Plante gets a game to add insult to injury. oops!

Latendresse also gets a game, and goes off to the showers to get ready to take it out on the women of Dallas when the rest of the guys are finished with the game. alas, no, as somehow he gets called back on the ice (how does this work? does he just put a sweater over his street clothes, or does everyone have to sit through him getting re-dressed? i want to know) and pots the game winner in the shootout. this before an enraged 8,907 less-than-throng-but-beyond-pissed Stars' partisans. i assume the Texas National Guard was called up to escort him out of the AA alive. quite an night for him

I'm pretty sure the shift length is when a line starts looking for an opportunity to get to the bench. It's not like a line on a 3-0 breakaway turns around and heads to the bench just because their shift is up.

I've always thought with PP an PK atleast, those "times" are more of a percentage. Your top unit will get 60 % of the PP or 70 % depending on what you use. For example, in a 2 MIN PP, if you have 60 as PP 1, and 40 for PP 2, they aren't going to change after 60 seconds, and then change after 40 seconds.

If you ever watch the human games "in-game", they stay out way longer than the exact times that you set for them as well.

I watched my entire game almost play-by-play with NYR. We both started out with our top lines, :37 later, we both switched to 3rd line. MTL took a penalty, and NYR PP unit 2 and MTL PK unit 2 played the entire 2 min PP.

5-on-5 play continued, I noticed both teams had their third line out for over a minute before changing, MTL took another PK, then NYR PP 1 went out and MTL PK 1 went out. both were out for just over a minute before switching to PP 2 and PK 2.

Another MTL penalty happened few minutes later, and once again, NYR started with PP 2 out and MTL had PK 2 out. NYR PP 2 was out there for 1:06 before scoring a goal.

Both teams had line 3 out, at 9:37, and then both teams put out line 4 at 9:58. NYR then put out line 4 against MTL line 1. That lasted for 20 seconds before Kostitsyn took a penalty and once against NYR PP 2 started and MTL PK 2. I've never noticed this before, but PP 2 goes against PK 2 and PP 1 goes against PK 1. I would have thought if NYR wanted to put out their 2nd unit PP, MTL would put our their top PK unit regardless. They were on the ice for well over a minute (almost full 2 min) before scoring again.

Line 1 went against Line 1 for about 90 seconds, Line 2 went against Line 2 for about 100 seconds. Then NYR switched to Line 4 and MTL kept Line 2 out. So it's all over the place, nobody is playing less than 10 seconds lol.

Kinda odd, in the 2nd period, after a 4th line shift, NYR took a penalty, and once again, MTL PP 2 went out, and NYR PK 2 went out.

I also have read numerous times on the fhockey boards that PP and PK numbers in the lines tab are percentages, and not shift length (like they are for 5-on-5 lines).

There are numerous threads on line matchups on fhockey, but every time I see a post like Brad's it never quite matches those explanations.

Usually it's Home 1 vs. Road 3, and Home 2 vs Road 4 and vice versa. I hit the "in-game" thing more than once, and to start the game both teams had Line 1 out, and as long as it was played even strength, it went 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, etc. After powerplays and what not, that's when the lines started to go different.

As well as, In the 2nd period, I noticed it went always 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4. It wasn't like that in the first period for some reason, but even in the 3rd, sometimes the top lines went out against each other.

Yeah I've read PP and PK is percentage as well, but I did 4 games of the "in-game" and unless there is a whistle the PP (or PK) doesn't change. When PP 2 started, they were out for the whole PP, and the PK unit doesn't change either. Unless the goalie covers the puck and there was a whistle, was the only time the lines changed.

Try it out for yourselves though, maybe our game was just.....different....lol.

I think by default the games are simmed as using "line-matching." If you are watching the games "in-game" you can chose to just roll the lines, or use line matching.

EHM just likes to have a way to punish those who don't update lines and who are coming off large winning streaks.

Yeah, that's the prevailing wisdom at fhockey.com too. The one thing I wonder about is that the CPU doesn't run special team shift lengths that add up to 100, so this makes me question the percentage icetime thing. I wonder if there's any way to prove this one way or the other.

In leagues that don't have shift length rules, I had pretty good success swapping my 1st and 3rd lines, and my 2nd and 4th lines on the road. I ran a test sim over an entire season and my road record was six wins better using a 3-4-1-2 line setup instead of 1-2-3-4. Of course because of the way EHM rolls, my home record got worse by three losses with exactly the same strategy. There's also likely random chance involved as I didn't run enough test sims for this to be conclusive.
