Ok, folks: we're announcing a rule change to counteract one of the issues that has arisen this season after the elimination of re-entry waivers. We previously used re-entry waivers as a way for GMs to get temporary cap relief by being able to demote players to the farm who made more than the AHL maximum. You could keep them there for a week, and they were exposed to waivers when they came back up to the pro team after that week. We eliminated re-entry waivers but kept the ability to demote high-salaried players to the AHL for a week. The committee believes that the rampant use of this loophole, if you will, has gotten out of hand and is contrary to the spirit of the original rule. The new rule is as follows:

No player on a regular (non-ELC) contract making over 1.5M can be demoted to the farm. This rule will start on the day after the conclusion of the World Junior Championships (so, early January; exact date TBA, depending on when EHM creates the tournament). This gives GMs about six weeks to figure out what to do with the guys currently on the AHL yo-yo.

For next season, we are already discussing moving closer to the NHL version of this rule, where you can demote high salaried players to the farm, but only get a certain amount of cap relief, rather than the entire contract like we currently have it.

Now you're just trying to make it tougher to calculate cap hits.

I actually was just going say that as a joke but, thinking about it, it will actually be tougher since I'd have to distinguish contracts over $1.5M by whether or not they're ELCs. Hmm. Have to think about how to handle that one.

Anywho, I like it. I'd think anything over $1.5M counting against the cap would probably make the most sense.

Wouldnt be hard figuring out if it an ELC or not.....under 22 would be ELC ( in most cases).....Unless the player gets signed when older then 19

If it's done in-game, it shows when a player signed his contract(s). It's how I figured out Etem was on his ELC.

Next year's rule would not count ELC contracts, like the current one.

It's easy enough to figure out when looking at it but I'm not gonna look through every team to see who they've got in the minors (I'm not that crazy). But it shouldn't be too tough to deal with.

I should add that for next season we are looking at doing away with the AHL max salary as well. We would most likely bring our rules closer to the NHL (as stated above) by imposing a limit on the cap relief a GM gets by sending down a high-salaried player.

Rather than tie anything to ELC status, we could just set the waiver age to 24 and allow anyone younger than that to also post in the AHL regardless of salary. It's a lot easier to check if a player is 24/than if they're still on their ELC.

And what would the cut off birthdate be if we did that? I like that idea.

I think we should keep it to ELC.
At something like 24, a guy could be in his 3 contract. Which doesnt make sense to me.

I think of a guy is in his 3 rd contract at age 24.....he is an AHLer for life lol....just my take on that
