2011 Tampa Bay Draft Review

Post by Jets GM »

Headed into the draft without a pick in the first three rounds, fans and pundits alike assumed a quiet 2011 entry draft for the 2011 President trophy winners. In less then 24 hours, it would be a entry draft that marked sweeping changes for a franchise without a face. Five different trades, 15 different players and 9 draft picks later the Tampa Bay Lightning turned a chapter in their storied franchise.

IN: Sheldon Souray, Cristobal Huet, Jaden Schwartz, Jake Allen, Jarrod Tinordi, 1st PIT 2012, 1st WPG 2012 , 1st VAN 2012, 1st STL 2012, 2nd ANA 2012, 2nd LA 2013, PIT 4th 2012, PIT 5th 2012, and TOR 5th 2012.

OUT: Martin Brodeur, Alex Tanguay, Tyler Pitlick, Martin St. Louis, Mattias Ohlund, Chris Kunitz, Nick Bjugstad, Evgeny Artyukhin and Adam Hall.

2011 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING DRAFT PICKS

4th RD
(116oa) Image - Gustav Bjorklund (C) - Likely passed until late in the fourth round due to his lack of size, Bjorklund boasts a surprisingly well rounded game for someone taken 116th overall. A playmaker, his ability to deal with the physical nature of the North American game will be the crux of whether he finds himself playing for a pro team or falling into obscurity in Europe.

5th RD(149oa) Image - Ryan Sproul (D) - Sproul was projected to be a 3rd to 4th round pick, but almost saw himself fall out of the first 5. Wildly incosistent, Sproul still managed to find a way to average over a point per game in the OHL. A physical specimen that makes a great first pass, Sproul will need to work on his mental game to be able to make it in the NHL. If he can work on his issues between the ears, Sproul could be a steal at 149 overall.

6th RD(176oa) Image - Luke Lockhart (LW) - Aside from an awesome sounding name, Lockhart looks to be no more the AHL fodder. Unless a miraculous growth in his talent or size, look for Lockhart to spend most of his career bouncing between farm systems and Europe.

7th RD(206oa) Image - Max Everson (D) - Everson was projected to go much higher then 206th overall, but managed to almost fall of the board completely. After displaying great vision with his playmaking, he appears almost allergic to playing any sort of defensive game which is quite crucial for being a defensemen. A renewed commitment to his own zone is the only way Everson can turn around a career which looks to be fizzling out before its even started.
