Rangers Make Big Swap; Likely Not Done

Post by Commish Bub(NYR) »

The ongoing remaking of the New York Rangers took another turn last week with the acquisition of forward Corey Perry from the Detroit Red Wings. Although in the midst of a season-long scoring slump (23 points in 43 games with the Wings), Perry immediately gives the Rangers offense a jump, and he should be a good fit on the first line with winger Pierre-Marc Bouchard. The deal also moves Artem Anisimov to the second line, which should prove more suitable to his abilities. Rangers GM Pat Webber gave up a considerable amount for Perry -- a first and second in this summer's draft, plus forward RJ Umberger and D Rostislav Klesla -- but he hopes Perry will be a "piece to build around for the next few years." Also coming over from the Wings is developing defenseman Jonas Brodin. While not quite the physical presence Klesla could be on the blueline, Brodin brings a steady positional game with an offensive side that is still rounding into shape. Both players made their Rangers debut last week in the 7-4 win over the Bruins, with Brodin making his first NHL appearance. Each made their mark on the game, with Perry registering two assists and Brodin dealing out a pair of hits.

Although Webber would not comment on any future moves the team might undertake, rumors have been swirling for some time that more deals are in the works. The GM has previously stated that a number of veterans are available for teams looking to help their playoff chances -- including Jason Arnott, Brian Sutherby, Ryan Malone, Travis Moen, and Anton Bubchuk -- but now some new names have been added to the mix. Sources are saying that there have been inquiries into players like Anisimov, David Booth, and Marty Hanzal, and that these inquiries have not been met with derisive laughter. Numerous prospects are apparently in the mix as well. Our sources have also confirmed that the only players who appear to be unavailable at this time are Bouchard, Ryan McDonagh, and Henrik Ludnqvist. Stay tuned, Rangers fans....
