Re: New Jersey Contracts
An award has been determined in the Travis Zajac arbitration.
GM proposal: 4.2M per for 4 years; comps: Voracek, Roy, JVR, Frolov
Agent proposal: 6.37M per for 4 years; comps: H. Sedin, Thornton, Perry
This is an interesting situation. Not only is there a huge gap, but it could set the market for NYR's Corey Perry, who is due for his arbitration hearing over the next couple of days. There are a couple of problems that Raymond faces with his proposal. For starters, Voracek, JVR, and Frolov are all LW/RW, and one of Zajac's many fine qualities is a high FA attribute. He finished 10th among C in FO%. Also, none of these players have a CON above 80 like Zajac does. The agent's proposal is the same amount that the formula would pay out, which has to be a consideration. Like the Getzlaf arbitration, Zajac just turned 28 last month.
One of the shortcomings about Zajac is that, while he has solid mid-70s attributes in defensive categories, as well as shooting and stickhandling, he really only possesses above average qualities in PL and FA. But, these are two of the most important qualities for centermen in EHM. He had a bit of a down year in 2011-12, but rebounded nicely this season. Also, as his agent pointed out, Zajac had a point-per-game in the playoffs and was a +5 in the series, pushing Carolina to seven games.
Zajac possesses great CON, no weaknesses, and two well above average attributes. He is not completely up to Ryan Getzlaf's caliber, so 6.5M would be high, but it's safe to say that he's in the ballpark. The agent put together a much stronger case, especially because he emphasized the FA and CON, while the GM comps were mostly wingers and guys with CONs in the 70s. The only reason I put Zajac slightly below Sedin in salary is because Sedin is overpaid based on his NHL contract. Zajac is undoubtedly the better player in EHEC, falling somewhere between Sedin and Getzlaf, and below Thornton.
I award Travis Zajac 6M per for the next four years. Raymond, you can accept/reject this award.

Re: New Jersey Contracts
An award has been determined in the Jon Gillies arbitration case.
Terms: 7 years
GM comps & proposal: 1.5M; Dansk, Demko, McAdam, M.Smith, Quick
Agent comps & proposal: 1.8M; Bishop, Bachman
Comparables for Gillies were difficult to determine, since many of his "peers" are still on their ELC, and thus their salaries don't really compare at all. Gillies played 60 games for the Devils this season, and put up more than respectable numbers. Is he the long-term future in net? Maybe, maybe not. But he's already shown promise, and has potential for more. Not much difference between the GM and the Agent proposals here, but I'm siding with the agent on this one: 1.8M for 7 years.
Ray, you can accept/reject this award. You can also alter the terms to 4 years if you choose.
