2018 Entry Draft Preview

Post by SharksGM »

I had a somewhat earlier start on the draft than usual, so I figured I'd give everyone a look at how it's going prior to the deadline so that we're all on the same page:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... ndiz8JSun8

The columns list current ratings at left, ceilings in the middle and projected final ratings at the right.

I have rated 30-ish likely first round picks and given them plausible ratings to match current consensus rankings. These are not final and you should expect them to change again before the draft. They will also not be entered in the file until after the season ends. Don't plan your entire deadline or offseason around these ratngs, but do be aware that they'll reflect scouts opinions - namely that this draft has one exceptional player (Dahlin), several talented wingers following, a lot of depth on D but underwhelming options for centers.

When we say after the season - I assume that would also mean after the playoffs? No biggie - just wondering.

As well - will we still be doing the lotto on the 28th?

The lotto that early would be exciting.

While Dahlin should be good, I will admit that it'll be sad to see Kimmo-MikkaGod isn't gonna happen

Edit:Also what are these values? I have an idea of what some of them mean but am not sure

CL TE PS CY H TR SORG

CL: Click: Seen that, no idea what it means
TE: Unknown
PS: Primary position?
CY: Unknown
H: health?
TR: Unknown
SORG: Unknown

Also, just read on ehm.fhockey.com that ""What is the Player cielings highest level?", the answer is 125." which there's obvious cases of this not being true in this league so is that bit altered a great deal here?

I'll set up the random draws tomorrow night so we can get results Friday night and preempt the NHL lottery.

Click is supposed to mean that guys would play well with each other when they match click numbers.

TE: Team?
PS: Position
CY: Country
H: Handedness
TR: Team rights
SORG: Status in organisation

As for ceilings, anything above 100 in certain attributes (POS, CH) would be considered as overdevelopment while others (SH, PL, HI) I guess can reach the suggested 150.
Thing is, when a guy has those ceilings combined with a low POT he usually will never get well rounded enough to justify the playing time needed to reach those high end ceilings.
Look at some of the 99SH guys that aren't worth much on the market (on the top of my head, Leblanc and Kuhnhackl would fit this description), those guys have a hard time being useful on any team because they're so one dimensional, despite having a rating that would suggest they're elite goal scorers.

Didn't know about the click thing, will have to take that into consideration for future lines.

Back to the ceilings, to be clear the site was referring to the ceiling value, not the projected future ability. Unless you're suggesting anything over a ceiling value (and not doing the typical (POT/100)*Ceiling calculation) requires overdevelopment. In anycase I'm pretty sure 125 is the highest natural value with 150s being put there in this league.

Fhockey's wrong on that one. Not sure where whoever wrote it got 125 but it's definitely 150.

I have seen 150 in other leagues before.

C/L David Seymour 2000/1/23 CAN 5'11 196 69 070 070 070 150 100 129 100 100 092 150 100 100 65 49

this is a game generated prospect with two 150 ceilings

Also if you click the link in the OP you'll notice I've slowly been adding draftees. There are 38 rated now, so a full first round+ and a few boosters. No goalies yet and all ratings subject to change up to draft time as usual.

I'm looking at the formulas for the future value and notice a couple things.
  • Attributes like Shooting/Playmaking have a capped ceiling value of 140 (min(ceiling,140))
  • The OD attributes (ST/CH/PO/SK) have weird formulas to determine a new ceiling value; if less than 100, that value, otherwise 100+( (100-Ceiling)/2) ex: 120-->110 (also, once again capped at 140).
You also have the HI taking into account the height limits which I expected, although have seen no real evidence for in the file itself. Anyways, where did you get the ST/CH/PO/SK formula from and why limit the ceiling to 140?

Meh. I could put 150, I guess. There are so few players with 150 ceilings that I don't think it really matters.

Those are not "weird formulas". They average out the short term benefits of high ceilings in those ratings (which players sometimes develop up to) and the long-term tendency to regress down to their potential. You're welcome to choose a different weighting if you want. Case in point: the following two lines were Sam Gagner's ratings in players.ehm 5 years ago and today:

62 86 89 99 97 58 73 82 74 83
62 85 82 82 82 59 76 82 74 83

He's 82 POT and has 110, 120. 130, 083 ceilings in ST/CH/PO/SK, respectively. In fastsims he tends to get to 82 skating in a few years. As you can see it's a slow process, but it's one of the frustrating things about trying to make interesting prospects in EHM - in the long term, they pretty much all develop exactly the same way, and you can only reliably adjust SH/PL/HI (the latter only for tall players too).
DevilsGM wrote:You also have the HI taking into account the height limits which I expected, although have seen no real evidence for in the file itself.
Well, find me players under 6'2 and drafted in the last 10 years who actually developed hitting up to their potential or beyond.

I wouldn't waste time on this one. The only time ive seen an under 6'2 guy with 8-0 hitting - he had 80 hitting on draft day and he managed to keep it by not training him on physical trainign ever.

SharksGM wrote:Well, find me players under 6'2 and drafted in the last 10 years who actually developed hitting up to their potential or beyond.
I have 69 players (not goalies) who meet that criteria without even taking height limitations into account. THis includes noteable players such as:

Name HI Ceiling
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 81 80.1
Dmitry Kulikov 78 76.6
Kieffer Bellows 76 75.6
Brett Connolly 75 73.9
Jonathan Tavares 75 74.4
Jesse Koskenkorva 75 70.2
Oleg Misyul 74 73.8
Reid Duke 73 67.2
Stephen Harper 73 72.9
Connor Bunnaman 72 71.1

When you adjust for height limitations the number just gets bigger (384), which says there's a bit of a cap there, but its not a hard ceiling.

Players who overdeveloped their Hitting the greatest.

Name Height HI F_HI C_HI OD
Tanner MacMaster 70 65 46.9 100 18.1
Jan Kern 70 68 51.1 105 16.9
Jake Leschyshyn 71 67 50.4 95 16.6
Adam Mascherin 70 69 53.9 90 15.1
Evan Barratt 71 68 53.2 95 14.8
Casey Fitzgerald 71 59 44.8 120 14.2
Dillon Dubé 70 72 58.1 120 13.9
Kyle Olson 70 64 51.1 100 12.9
Lias Andersson 71 68 55.3 90 12.7
Travis Dermott 71 65 52.5 100 12.5
Cam Dineen 71 67 54.6 70 12.4
Joey Anderson 71 66 53.9 120 12.1
Erik Karlsson 71 66 54.6 110 11.4

There's a relationship, but its not a hard cap. The only real cap I've seen is a lower cap of 40, pretty much everyone is guarenteed to hit 40 across the board for all their hockey skills if they're playing hockey.

Hitting is trained on physical training?

Re: 2018 Entry Draft Preview

Hitting = Pot x Hit Ceiling / 100

<5"9 - 40 Hit Ceiling max (or lower # in actual file)
5"10/5"11 - 70 Hit Ceiling max (or lower # in actual file)
6"0/6"1 - 90 Hit Ceiling max (or lower # in actual file)
>6"2 - Actual hit ceiling in file

Nothing trains hitting other than ice time (arguably/especially HnG tactics).

Any existing Hit skills above the mentioned ceilings were CPU generated at player creation or manually entered at some point.

Standard farm ice time can raise stats to 40, except Penalty, Leadership, Greed, Pot, Con... (fighting ?)

EHM always rounds up for stats... ie 85.6 hitting = 86.

Hitting stops going up at the age of 28.

Like with most things EHM I see the odd quirk... ie Hitting going above formula by 1 point, not sure what is behind this.

Re: 2018 Entry Draft Preview

OFF/DEF/OVE are rounded down.

Exceeding the estimated ceiling by 1 point isn't uncommon, in fact for goalies most of them exceed the POT value by 1.

Reid Duke 73 67.2
Stephen Harper 73 72.9
Connor Bunnaman 72 71.1
... most of those guys only developed to their ceiling rounded up plus another 1 at most. That's not especially interesting.

I carefully trained Koskenkorva to overdevelop his DF, but unfortunately I don't know any way to prevent his HI from regressing back down to 71 in a similar way as with ST/CH/PO/SK ceilings over 100, short of just never playing him until his mid 20s.

A couple of the other examples are more interesting. Reid Duke developed as if his hitting ceiling were 90 (as for his height), not 85. I've seen that before and I'm not sure how that works, but it only seems to help players whose hitting ceilings are below their height's max.

The other curious ones are Dillon Dube and Kailer Yamamoto. Dube was drafted with 62 HI, more than his 83 POT * 70HI/100 = 58.1 cap. Same with Yamamoto (84 POT x 70 = 58.8 cap), who started at 64 HI and is now at 67. Starting off short players with high HI ratings seems like one way to make things interesting as I'm not sure how they'll eventually develop, but I'm fairly certain that Dube will never reach his full 120 HI ceiling. Where exactly they'll end up seems to depend on how long they play on the farm, which line tactics they use and their training.

Alright, so good news! I finished the 90th prospect today. That's three full rounds!

The bad news is that this is getting exhausting and I'm not sure I have the energy to push through 10 more prospects per day for another week. Anyone want to lend a hand with this? There's an easy way and a hard way. The easy way is just to fill in some ratings and ceilings for an existing prospect. The hard way is to look up someone who was drafted and enter their info, including birthdate, country, handedness, etc. The guys in the spreadsheet now were based on early CSB rankings and many of the guys I haven't rated yet had disappointing seasons, weren't drafted and are even less likely to ever make the NHL than your typical fourth rounder; likewise there are plenty of guys who were drafted who aren't on the list.

Any volunteers?

PM me here or @ facebook.

I can provide you with potential, cellings and CON for all the players based on what I know.
I can also send you their birthdate, height, weight, nationality and all that stuff.
I can't input and/or edit the players myself though, but I'd gladly help any way I can.
I have free days on Thursday and Friday and I don't have any plans so it seems that I'll be at home so I could work on that. All day.

On the plus side, thanks to Julien we're at 118 draftees. That's nearly four whole rounds! Everyone who was taken in the first two rounds IRL is in. If you care at all, here are the third rounders we're missing:

#68 Vancouver Canucks Tyler Madden (F)
#70 New York Rangers Jacob Ragnarsson (D)
#80 Columbus Blue Jackets Marcus Karlberg (F)
#81 Detroit Red Wings Seth Barton (D)
#84 Detroit Red Wings Jesper Eliasson (G)
#89 Florida Panthers Logan Hutsko (F)
#91 Winnipeg Jets Nathan Smith (F)
#92 Minnesota Wild Connor Dewar (F)

Seeing as the odds of a late 3rd/early 4th actually making it are close to zero, I'm not too fussed about it.

There are some sleepers in this draft. There should also be some decent players in the later rounds - especially forwards. This draft should be deep at forward and goalie position. Defense- not so much, although this draft has been very deep in offensive-defensemen, puck-moving defensemen. Smaller but skilled guys. Also, there are some realllly good prospect that weren't even drafted by the NHL. I could mention David Levin, Linus Nyman, Jerry Turkulainen, Patrick Hrehorcak....just to name the few.

Uh, the guys you entered at the bottom of last year's draft? They're supposed replace existing guys in the first 172 rows, and including country (CY) and handedness (H). Every column is in the same order as in players.ehm if you can't figure out the short form.

I’m pretty sure we’re further than 90.

The only prospects you should overwrite are those with default ratings (40s in main, 100 in all ceilings) and who were not drafted in the NHL. Everyone else should stay.

I entered a few more garbage tier prospects so we're up to 130 done. That leaves just rows 132-172 to do.

Dan, thank you for this information. I will start taking inputting the names I already entered.

Can some please tell me the meaning of the following cells:

Q, S, T, U, BF, BH, BI, CI

Sorry you had to do some much of this Dr. Taranu.

I will get started on next years spreadsheet much sooner now that I know how it works, so it doesn't get left until the end.

Just a heads up that Adam Mascherin should be renamed. He re-entered the draft in real life, but on here he is firmly ensconced in my prospect pool.
I would have changed it myself, but I don't want to accidentally double another prospect you guys end up using.

Q = Click (I'd say random numbers would be best but you might need someone else to do that)
S = Position (1 = G, 2 = D, 3 = LW, 4 = C, 5 = RW)
T = Country (http://ehm.fhockey.com/text%20explinati ... ntries.txt)
U = Handedness (0 = right, 1 = left)
BF = Training (can probably just do 1 (rest) for everybody)
BH = Height (0 = 5'5")
BI = Status in organization (5 = blue chip, 6 = future regular, 7 = long shot)
CI = Alternate position (same as position)

The draft is pretty much done now, barring correcting any mistakes I missed. Have a look at it. The draft itself will begin next Friday. We'll update the file tomorrow in preparation and have updated contract rules/calculator as well.
