The Bruins briefly closed within one point of a playoff spot, defeating Columbus 5-3, but then the Islanders beat Carolina 5-0, eliminating the Hurricanes from playoff contention.

The Panthers and Capitals kept pace with each other at the bottom, losing to Pittsburgh and Buffalo respectively, while the same happened at the other end, as the Sens and Lightning both earned a point in ties against Toronto and Winnipeg.

The Devils beating Montreal, along with Pittsburgh's win, Toronto's tie, and the Rangers not playing, means the gap between 3rd and 7th in the East is just 5pts, while just 1pt separates 4th and 6th.
