Homepage, Schedule & Results, League Save File

Two blowouts and two tight games tonight.

The Sens exorcise some demons and absolutely dumpster the Bruins so badly that the game couldn't even justify giving Chet Pickard first star for his 11-save shutout.

The Pens edge out the Blue Jackets 3-2, with shots and other counting stats tilted in roughly that ratio.

In the only upset of the night, the Bolts take a 4-3 lead early in the third, but Thomas Novak's heroic dash ties the game with the goalie pulled*, and Mike Cammalleri punches in the OT winner in probably the first shot (sorry, forgot to check before advancing to the next game). As you might imagine, goaltending was not the highlight here.

The evening ends on a less exciting note as the Habs dominate the Panthers 3-0 thanks to two goals from Ty Dellandrea, outshooting the Cats 33-17. After the game, the media expressed disappointed in Florida's 9 game losing streak. Most of the criticism was addressed at the work of general manager Andrew Lemke and head coach Robert Svehla.

Side note, there were no injuries but a number of roughing penalties in Montreal, probably because a Florida player is responsible for one of Montreal's numerous serious injuries this season. But this brings up the issue of suspensions. At some point, I had intended to review suspension lengths for the playoffs. You'll notice the max length of 25 games covers the entire length of a Cup run, unless it's a clutch team that keeps winning 7-game series. In the end, I couldn't settle on what to do and changed nothing, so we're sticking with regular season suspension lengths. While it might be a bit unfair to penalize a 2-3 month injury more than a 4 month injury, since the end result is basically the same, the punishment is still at least proportional to the severity of the injury. For that matter, if someone gets a 6+ month injury in the playoffs, they will end up missing games next October.

There's an old adage that you're never in trouble until you lose at home. Let's go, 1-1 coming home to NY with some real stuff to be proud of. Let's go boys, not quitting yet! Tommy Novak and the hatty!
