Uneducated Factually Inaccurate 2023 Unrestricted Free Agency Preview

Post by Sharp Stick Bisons »

While listening to the EHEC podcast I was inspired to create a preview for the upcoming FA. With this being my first season, it could be interesting to reflect on in the future. My rankings have been scientifically proven to be nearly baseless and will likely differ from everyone else (just like the real media). Players are listed under their last played position on the team roster screen, there will likely be mistakes. I'm realizing now that when I started this yesterday I forgot about RFAs. Oh well. UFA preview.

TOP 10 2023 FREE AGENTS

#1 Ilya Kovalchuk - Winger - 80/93/65 - Previous salary 8.6M
EHEC's all time leading goal scorer is getting old. However he is still one of the top offensive players in the league. That should make it easy to overlook his penalty troubles and complete lack of defence. With 55 EN there might be some load management that needs to happen.

#2 Rick Nash - Winger - 86/82/88 - Previous salary 8.4M
The most well rounded player available. Offense, defence, this guy does it all and he shows up every night while defying the odds as a 39 year old. His 99 HT stands out making him a takeaway machine. Add in 85 SH and you have a monster at both ends of the ice. Could be dangerous if his SK or PO falls off a cliff.

#3 David Krejci - Winger - 72/90/72 - Previous salary 6.35M
While he is also getting older, there should be less worry about immediate vopatization. 91 EN tops off a solid physical category for the 37 year old.

#4 Brent Seabrook - Defence - 84/77/83 - Previous salary 6M
When I started writing this he had 95 EN, upon review it seems it is now 99. Seabs wants to play forever. And if he keeps the 83s across his defensive ability he might be able to. When he's not in the box, he's a great asset.

#5 Jason Spezza - Winger - 79/85/77 - Previous salary 6.35M
Minimal weakness' for old man Spezza. Still a top offensive player with the bonus of 85 HT and 90 EN. At age 40 he might look like Jagr, depending how his ST holds up. He should be a top addition this year.

#6 Zack Kassian - Winger - 67/76/88 - Previous salary 5.3M
The Kassassin is a brusing winger with 99 HT who can hold his own at both ends of the ice. While he shouldn't be looked to as a main scoring piece, he is an excellent option to add another dimension to any top 6.

#7 James Van Reimsdyk - Winger - 76/81/84 - Previous salary 5.65m
At only 34 years old, he is one of the younger options for proven talent. 99 HT makes him a leader in takeaways. Coupled with his consistent offensive ability, JVR is an excellent complimentary piece. So long as his feet can keep up.

#8 Brent Burns - Defence - 77/79/80 - Previous salary 5.88M
88 ST + CH highlight an otherwise average to slightly above average looking player. At age 38 there will be questions about his future. Could thrive in the right environment, unlikely to be "the guy" anymore.

#9 Evander Kane - Center - 76/80/77 - Previous salary 4.56M
Not the flashiest player but well rounded. Kane provides value with his excellent FA ability and consistent play. Having an proven record of quality +/- he could be a quality 2nd line center with a temper.

#10 Ryan Suter - Defenceman - 75/82/77 - Previous salary 6.48M
With 95 PL and 88 SK he is the best offensive defenceman available this year. However, with 68 HT and 62 EN he may have issues continuing as a 25 minute per night guy, especially given his age of 38. A powerplay specialist for sure but how much more can he offer before it starts to hurt him?

HM: Tyler Biggs, Leon Draisaitl, Marian Gaborik, Thomas Vannelli, Nathan Beaulieu.
