Why are people still trying to offer contract extensions and why are they being entered?

Why shouldn't we offer contract extensions..................
Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
There's a signing freeze for players currently under contract until the Committee can hash out a proper formula for re-signing guys, to help avoid cheap 6-year deals for young studs.

Just to make a note. I came across this thread while compiling the E5 stuff and these contracts are back where they were prior to the contracts being entered. Kostitsyn, Smaby, and MaxPac are all back on their one year deals that expire shortly.

Can I actually re-tract the Arbitration for Wallin? I didn't realize I had a Team Option I could use on Zidlicky instead.
*on second thought I'll just wait to find out the Arbitration on Chara as I may use Wallin as a 7th guy over Johnsson*

Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
An award has been determined in the Ethan Moreau arbitration.
MTL comps: Grier, Malhotra, Asham; 1 year with TO at 1.7M
Arbitrator comps: Steckel, Halpern, Peca
Ethan Moreau boasts a solid 77 DF and high LE. He is a very valuable asset to a team looking to make a deep playoff run and that's what MTL is. He does have average CON for his role and did take 56 minutes worth of minor penalties last season. Along with that, though, he was able to chip in 21 points.
There are a lot of players with similar OF/DF attributes to Moreau, but his 81 LE is what to focus on here. The question then becomes, how much is leadership worth with so many comparable players making anywhere between 1.5-2.5M. Given that Montreal traded for Moreau, there was obviously a desire to add that leadership.
There is no evidence to suggest that Moreau deserves any kind of pay cut, which my arbitrator agreed with suggesting 2M per. With EHEC's retirement policy, he will not decline in attributes and is a solid veteran leader on a team with just four guys over 70 LE. Perhaps an argument can be made for a slight discount based on Moreau's low PE. Because of that, I'll lean closer to the arbitrator, but go in the middle.
Brad, you can accept/reject Ethan Moreau for 1 year and a team option at 1.875M.

Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
The Zdeno Chara rights arbitration has been completed.
The Montreal Canadiens offered 6.5M per for 2 years with a team option. Because Chara was testing the market, the salary had to be 105% of my arbitrator's ruling.
My arbitrator proposed 6.15M.
105% of 6.15M is $6.4575M.
The Montreal Canadiens have signed Zdeno Chara for 6.5M for 2 years + TO.

Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
An award has been determined in the Ales Hemsky arbitration.
Terms: 3 yrs + TO
GM proposal: 5.2M per; comps: Parise, Heatley, Zherdev
Agent proposal: 6.7M per; comps: Kostitsyn, Heatley, Spezza
Hemsky followed the player protocol of having a strong season in a contract year. Hemsky wound up with .96 PPG with 73 pts in 76 games during the regular season and five more points in seven playoff games. In terms of the comparable players, Hemsky is somewhere in between all of them, which is good. He is the only 99 passer of the bunch and him and Heatley are the only two with 80 or better CON. The fact that this is one of the few cases where the GM has proposed a sizable raise shows what Hemsky is worth to him.
Zherdev and Parise are a little low for Hemsky and Spezza is a little high, largely because of his 91 HI. Kostitsyn is a solid comp who is slightly better defensively. Kostitsyn would have made close to 6.5M without the franchise tag option. Hemsky is a more consistent player than Kostitsyn and slightly lower defensively, mostly in the all-important hitting tactic. Consider that an unmentioned comp, Marc Savard, makes 5.9M and Hemsky is more consistent and significantly better defensively, and it's hard to put Hemsky's value below Savard's. Savard did have a better season than Hemsky, playing six more games and having 13 more points. Savard was also invisible in the playoffs and had nearly 40% of his points on the powerplay, compared to 30% on the PP for Hemsky. Hemsky is also in the prime of his career, doesn't take penalties, and should be an even more valuable player with the new line restrictions.
I award Ales Hemsky $6,250,000 per for the next 3 seasons with a team option. His 80+ CON and 99 PL are a combination that is rarely seen around the league. Also, as Hemsky just barely avoids the formula by a couple of months, his formula contract would be $6,337,500, so this is reasonably close to what he would have gotten had he been born in July instead of March.

Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
Awards have been determined in the Alex Burrows, Carlo Colaiacovo, and Saku Koivu arbitrations.
Burrows
Length: 1 + TO
GM proposal: 1.6M per; comps: MacArthur, Tootoo, Malhotra
Agent proposal: 2.5M per; comps: Kobasew, Bourque, Ott
As has been the case with most of the depth forwards covered so far in arbitration, there's a wide range of players that are similar in ability but drastically different in salary. Burrows underperformed for three different teams this season, bouncing from the Blue Jackets to the Jets to the Canadiens. One of the things that sets Burrows apart from the other mid-70s DF role players is that he has a 78 SH attribute. It didn't show up this season, with just seven goals in 70 games and one in the playoffs, but it is still there and has to be considered because EHM is a numbers game. But, Burrows is a player who seems to underperform pretty regularly, which is probably a byproduct of how EHM divides up ice time.
Burrows does have a good CON, which is somewhat negated by a low PE that has resulted in 268 PIM over four EHEC seasons. It's kind of difficult to assign a value to Burrows. Is he the player who chipped in 17 points and a +10 in 58 games for the Jackets in 2011-12, the player who had 11 points in his first 44 games this season while posting a +6, or the player who struggled mightily with little ice time in Montreal with five points in 41 games, including playoffs.
It's hard to see where Burrows deserves a salary increase, but it's also hard to see where he hurt the team enough for the maximum decrease. He has a good CON, pretty good LE skills, and a good enough SH to be an offensive factor in the right situation. Ultimately, Burrows deserves around the same salary, with a slight discount because of his poor showing for the Habs. I award Burrows 1 year + team option at 1.9M per.
Brad, you can accept/reject this award.
Colaiacovo
Length: 3 + TO
GM proposal: 1.425M per, comps: Gervais, Robidas, Michalek
Agent proposal: 2.75M per, comps: Daley, Wisniewski, Oduya
Colaiacovo is a solid two-way defenseman who handles the puck well enough to limit the turnovers. That's why he was +46 in TA-GA ratio. There aren't any real weaknesses in Colaiacovo's game and he played a big role for the Canadiens during the run to Game 7 of the ECF. Colaiacovo certainly played well enough for a salary increase. Gervais was coming off a very low real-life base salary, Robidas played well getting a lot of ice time for an orphaned team and could see an interesting offer in free agency, and Michalek had just 10 points, despite a higher CON than Colaiacovo. Daley was plucked out of free agency, which could be a baseline for what Colaiacovo could get on the open market. So was Wisniewski, added by these same Montreal Canadiens at 3.25M per. Oduya got 2.6M in arbitration last summer. The problem was that Oduya was coming off of an inflated real life contract.
Colaiacovo's combination of not turning the puck over and having a nice season with a team that made a deep playoff run is worthy of a raise. Also of consideration is that Colaiacovo will get the LE and CON upgrades over the duration of this contract. A CON upgrade to a player like him is big and it will put his LE over 70. That's worth considering.
I award Carlo Colaiacovo 2.25M per for the next three years + team option.
Brad, you can accept/reject this award.
Koivu
Length: 1 + TO & PO
GM proposal: 2.5M; comps: Whitney, Hecht, Jagr
Agent proposal: 3.75M; comps: Alfredsson, Kariya, Langkow, Connolly
Koivu managed 43 points this season while playing just 14 minutes per game on average. He still has a well above average PL attribute and an elite leadership skill. He still gets around the ice well at 38 years old with an 81 SK attribute. Thus far, he has shown little sign of vopatizing and a 75 CON should slow the process down. He also won over 53% of his faceoffs, the second-best mark on the Canadiens during the regular season. Koivu struggled in the postseason, but he also saw very little ice time with just 10 minutes per game and lost over 65% of his faceoffs. It was a bad time for Koivu to struggle and it has to be considered here.
Koivu is going to start showing signs of decline. But his 97 LE, his PL skills, and his quality CON are all good attributes for him to have. With Jason Arnott heading to free agency, the Habs will have three players over 80 LE and nobody else above 73. He'll certainly be taking on a bigger role on a team that would appear destined for another playoff appearance. Koivu doesn't deserve less money and deserves a slight raise for the additional LE and the team option gives the Canadiens some security if his skills do start to drop off.
I award Saku Koivu 1 year + TO & PO at 3.15M.
Brad, you can accept/reject this award.
Burrows

P.S. - Was drunk Bern my negotiator last night?
Can't compare Langkow to Koivu. Also don't see how you don't mention Michalek as a comp to Carlo when they are identical!

The agent's job is to argue for his client. Why would he use Michalek as a comparison when Michalek doesn't make a lot of money?

Well, no matter who's side you're on, can't argue with a player that is the exact same to a pending free agent.
Anyway, did all the farm contracts and prospect contracts get entered without any problems?

77 average, 1.5M = 150% New base = $3.75M + .250 con bonus = $4.0M (even) a squabble over 12,000.

lol I was fine with him at $4.012 but whatever his contract is just offer away at 4 years.
Also offer ELC to D Steven Santini with a two-way and C Vincent Trochek with two-way.

Re: Montreal Canadiens Contract Offers
With all due respect to this independent agent, the Montreal Canadiens will reject the arbitration handed down on pending free agent Alex Burrows. Burrows brought nothing to this playoff team that lost in Game 7 to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Burrows found himself in the penalty box at key times in the playoffs, and wasn't contributing offensively to warrant a bottom 6 forward spot. The Canadiens will be happy to move forward with Peter Holland taking his place and wish Mr.Burrows all the best in the future.Burrows
