In the month of February, Greybill led the Hurricanes to a 9-2-2 record (good for 76.9% efficiency) including victories against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who sit only two points back of the Hurricanes, and the surging Boston Bruins. The only two games in which the Hurricanes failed to register at least a point both came against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Hurricanes are currently the league's top team with a sparkling 41-16-9 record, holding a slim one point lead over the San Jose Sharks and a two point lead over the conference and division rival Tampa Bay Lightning. Greybill felt no need for change as he stood with his roster through Monday's trading deadline. Eric Staal currently leads the team with 32 goals and 72 points in 66 games while posting an excellent +25 rating. Fan favorite Ray Whitney is not far behind with 63 points, and Mikko Koivu, acquired earlier in the season from Minnesota, is third with 50 points. Joni Pitkanen leads the team in helpers with 41 and leads Greybill's defensemen with 49 points. Cam Ward, despite an 88.2% save percentage, boasts a 37-11-2 record with a 2.62 goals against average - enough to get the job done playing for the league's highest scoring team with 231 goals for in 66 games.
Carolina is currently 2-1 in March, a month that includes a home-and-home series against the Lightning that could very well decide the Southeast Division title. The two teams play once more in the last game of the season.
