You can make the offers because they don't take effect until the following season. On goaltenders, an arbitrator will decide them for now, until/unless I come up with a better solution. All of these are prior to adding Exhibit 5 bonuses, which will be done at season's end.

Alzner: $2.65M ($1.75 new base, 600k (attribute bonus), 250k (CON 80+), 350k (def. spec.), -300k (<65 devaluation))
Boyle: $1,081,250 ($1,181,250 new base, -100k (<65 devaluation)) average is 71.5, the .5 will round up if it means a bracket change (may add the 100k back if his Strength number if above 80 after the fastsim)
Godfrey: I'll let you know when I complete the fastsim
Osala: $1.75M ($1.7 new base, -300k (<65 devaluations), 350k (def. spec.))

1,814,582.5. (base 2,114,582.5) (3 <65 devaluations (penalty, PL, ST); 80 in faceoffs, but doesn't count for D).

Re: Washington Offers/Extensions

For Varlamov's arbitration, there were several key factors in play. The first was that it would help set the market for young goaltenders in EHEC. The second is that Varlamov has had fantastic regular seasons and very iffy postseasons. The third is that Varlamov has won 49 and 42 games over the last two seasons. This makes him a top 10 goaltender and thus should be paid as one.

Washington suggested 1 year/3M, citing Price (bad contract from previous financial policy, but post-E5 bonuses), Cory Schneider (who will get a more fair 4.25 after E5 bonuses), and Kari Lehtonen (another previous financial policy guy).

My arbitrator came back with Cam Ward, Cory Schneider, and Ilya Bryzgalov. All are making 4.25 (with E5 for Schneider) or 4.5M.

That came to my arbitrator deciding on a 1 year/4M contract.

My final ruling, looking over all the factors is that I award Varlamov 1 year at 3.75M. The reason for the slightly lower number is that he will be due back to arbitration next season and pending that success, he may be able to cash in on a bigger payday. Also, a slightly lower number because Bryzgalov has orchestrated a WCF appearance this year and Ward in the ECF. When Varlamov reaches that success, he will be paid accordingly.

Tim, you can accept or decline this arbitration figure.

Washington grungingly accepts the arbitration ruling. We hope that Varlamov lives up to the faith the arbitration committee has given him, else he can take his services to the KHL where there's no excuse for him to not play like a top ten goaltender.

Re: Washington Offers/Extensions

Post by Virtual Jarmo »

The Andrei Markov arbitration has reached a verdict.

Washington proposed a six-year pre-franchise tag number of 5.5M, citing Mike Green, Joni Pitkanen, and Tomas Kaberle as comparables. Green is on a pre-EHEC contract that expires this year and the new system will put his contract at nearly 7M. Pitkanen will be at 5.55M and Kaberle is at 4.25M. Markov is significantly better than Kaberle, has a significantly higher CON and more LE than Pitkanen, and Green will make more than both the GM and arbitrator proposed numbers.

My arbitrator came back with Pitkanen, Green under his new contract, and Danny Boyle as comps. Boyle makes 6,666,667. For all intents and purposes, Danny Boyle is a very close comp and so my arbitrator felt that he was the closest in production, salary, and comparable attributes.

My arbitrator proposed a 6.5M/year contract.

I am going to rule in favor of the arbitrator and go with 6.5M/year for Markov, making his franchise tag 4,875,000. Markov is one of the few 80+ OF defensemen in the file, has a CON in the 80s, and the notion that a franchise tag would be placed on Markov makes a 6.5 ruling extremely fair. To suggest absolutely no raise, and in fact, a decline in salary, was simply not going to happen.

Tim, you can accept/reject this award.
