Re: Carolina Extensions
An award has been determined in the Mikko Koivu arbitration.
CAR comps: Sharp, Burns, Michalek, Getzlaf, Doan; proposed 4.75M per
Arbitrator comps: Getzlaf, Kopitar
Make no mistake, Mikko Koivu is a top 20 (maybe even 10-15) player in the file. He lead all centers in TA-GA ratio, has a high faceoff attribute, and was largely kept unproductive on points because of the role he was playing with Carolina. On a scoring line, he would likely have thrived to the tune of 75-80 points, perhaps more. To top it off, Koivu had 6 PIM while playing in 80 games.
One thing to remember about this Koivu case is that if he were a year younger and subject to the formula, he would make 6.9M per. The fact that he is 28 and there are so few comparables to him in the file makes an arbitration award difficult to come up with.
My arbitrator awarded Koivu 6.25M. Full-knowing that the franchise tag is going to be in play here because Ward is signed long-term and, though CAR has some great prospects, Koivu is the chief opportunity to use it. I have to rule with that in mind. Also, I have to be mindful of Koivu's 14 playoff points even with the spot in the lineup he was in.
For Mikko Koivu, I'm going to rule fully with the arbitrator and award him 6.25M (4,687,500 FT) per season.
Dave, you can accept/reject this ruling for Koivu at 6.25M.

Re: Carolina Extensions
Awards have been determined in the Chad LaRose and Jussi Jokinen arbitrations.
LaRose:
CAR comps & proposed salary: Sjostrom, Talbot, Helm, Slater; 1.36M for 1 year
Arbitrator comps: Reasoner, Slater, Malhotra, Dvorak, Upshall
LaRose had more production than all of the comparable players, and in some cases, significantly more. Also, his production over the last two seasons has been consistent, with 26 points this past season and 28 the season before. As a grind line player with decent LE and decent intangibles, his production is better than most players in his range. I would also add a Mike Knuble type player in with his comps, who had just 14 points for me.
With LaRose's production in his role, there is little reason to offer him a decline in salary. His previous season's salary is 1.7M, and my arbitrator concurred with offering him his present salary.
It would be his salary based on the formula and he is just 2 years removed from that.
Dave, you can accept/reject Chad LaRose at 1.7M for 1 year.
-------------------
Jokinen:
Jussi Jokinen is in the same boat as LaRose.
CAR comps: Williams, Comrie, Stempniak (all signed as EHEC FAs) offered 1 yr @ 1.36M
Arbitrator comps: Wheeler (previous 30% rule signee), V. Kozlov
With players like Jokinen, there are a lot of guys with similar attributes and intangibles.
Rather than go through an entire explanation, my arbitrator proposed a small discount of 1.5M.
Jokinen certainly benefitted from playing with a center like Staal, but he is still a 74 OF forward with responsible DF and will not hurt you with penalties.
I would propose a number of 1.475M for Jokinen, going slightly in between the two offers, but realizing that Jokinen's value to the team, compared to LaRose's is lessened by his low HI and 58 CON.
Dave, you can accept/reject Jussi Jokinen at 1.475M for 1 season.

Re: Carolina Extensions
An award has been determined in the Andrew Alberts arbitration.
CAR comps & Proposal: Van Ryn (EHEC UFA), Smaby (now makes 1.2M with formula), Welch; 850k 1 year
Arbitrator comps: Erskine, O'Brien, Welch
Alberts's two chief defensive stats, TA-GA and hits given, are both extremely impressive based on his limited ice time. He is what he is, a serviceable 6th/7th defenseman with high DF, good size, and solid CON.
No evidence is seen to warrant a decrease in salary for Alberts.
My arbitrator proposed keeping Alberts at the same salary for this upcoming season and I see no reason to disagree.
Dave, you can accept/reject Andrew Alberts at 1.05M for 1 season.

Re: Carolina Extensions
Going to make one less arb case and just give Murphy 1.5M with a two-way and let him play in the AHL. At 74/64, he's not really an NHL caliber goaltender anyway.
You fine with that, Dave?

Re: Carolina Extensions
Awards have been determined in the Ray Whitney, Tim Gleason, and Tom Kostopoulos arbitrations.
Whitney
Terms: 1 yr
GM proposal: 1.8M; comps: Prospal, Selanne, Jagr, V. Kozlov
Agent proposal: 3M; comps: Samsonov, Stillman, Hejduk, Sullivan
This is a tough case to rule on. On one hand, Whitney has been insanely consistent and productive for his age during the first three seasons of EHEC. He's had no less than 64 points in a season and even topped 75 in 2010-11. The hard part for me to determine if this is a byproduct of his linemates or if Whitney is that valuable of a player. It's safe to say that Whitney outproduces his attributes, as he's just a 73 SH and 73 PL, a defensive liability, and has average CON.
I think it would be interesting to look back and see how many of Whitney's 42 assists were the primary one or if it was just EHM's way of stat-padding with secondary assists. Unlike some of the other high CON veterans, Whitney definitely might regress during next season. Jagr is a decent comp in terms of attributes, however, it's important to remember that Jagr was signed as a free agent after Tampa Bay's buyout, and at a very GM-friendly price. Prospal, who makes 2M, has a CON in the mid-50s, as does Kozlov. Hejduk is decidedly better offensively, as is Sullivan.
So, in this case, the closest comp I can agree with is Stillman who, playing on a third line for much of the season with the Blue Jackets, still managed 42 points. Considering that Kariya got 3.25 and Koivu got 3, Whitney is definitely below them, but by how much is the question, as he lacks Kariya's high LE/CON and Koivu's faceoff ability.
Ray Whitney will be 42 before the 2013-14 season starts, so this will be his final year in the file as a player, putting to bed an illustrious career that saw him tally his 1000th point this past season.
I'll meet in the middle of both parties here and award Whitney $2,400,000 for his final season as a reward for his tremendous production over the duration of EHEC and a lifetime achievement award for a fine career.
Gleason
Terms: 2 yrs
GM proposal: 2.75M; comps: Girardi, Morrisonn, Keith, Markov, Beauchemin, Boynton, Daley, Grebeshkov, Colaiacovo, Ericsson, Klesla
Agent proposal: 3.35M; comps: Morris, Ballard, Stuart, Wisniewski
I guess the theme here is that Gleason is exceptionally similar to a lot of players in the file. Of course, as my luck goes, only one, Brad Stuart, faced an arbitration case, where he received an award that was 100k less than his previous year's 3.75M salary.
The first thing that sticks out to me is Gleason's 85 CON. He's an extremely reliable player. With Keith's E5 bonuses this past season bumping him to 2.9M and change, him and Gleason are pretty comparable as Keith's more balanced offense is washed out by Gleason's stronger HI. What offensive shortcomings Gleason has are negated by the fact that he led the Canes in hits and led the team in TA-GA ratio by 70 over the second-closest defenseman. Gleason's offensive abilities may not warrant a raise, but his defensive play is extremely strong and that's in a very tough division and conference. Gleason's representatives also want an increased role for Gleason this season since he was second-to-last on the team in ice time even with his impressive defensive numbers.
I award Tim Gleason $3,000,000 per for the next two seasons.
Kostopoulos
Terms: 1 yr + TO
GM proposal: 650k; comps: Brown, Prust, Asham, Staubitz, Kreps
Agent proposal: 800k; comps: Reasoner, Devereaux
Unfortunately for Kostopoulos, he missed nearly his entire contract year due to injury, playing in just eight games. As such, we see fit to accept the GM's proposal of $650,000 for the 2012-13 season as a chance to work back into the starting lineup and become a valuable player in the organization.
Dave, you can accept/reject these awards.
Whitney

Re: Carolina Extensions
Awards have been determined in the Tuomo Ruutu and Dustin Penner arbitrations.
Ruutu
Terms: 1 yr + PO
GM proposal: 3.25M; comps: Kesler, Kunitz, Cole, Clowe, Armstrong , Clarkson, Hartnell
Agent proposal: 4.2M; comps: Perry, Filatov, Morrow, Booth
One thing that's clear in this case is that Ruutu underperformed given his attributes. Part of that was due to the injury and part of that may be due to the way that he was used when healthy. Either way, with 24 goals in 66 games, Ruutu probably would have reached the 30 goal plateau had he played in all 82. Another thing to consider are that Ruutu received very little PP time on a Carolina team that made very few lineup adjustments throughout the season.
There are two things at play here. One is that Ruutu, in terms of market value, would likely get 4.5-5M per season in free agency. Knowing that there's a player option in this proposed contract probably wouldn't sway his agents the way it did in other deals. The other is that Ruutu is just 28 years old, but already has a 72 LE rating and has plenty of room for improvement on that.
Because Ruutu had a bit of a down season and a one-year deal is a chance to show that 2011-12 was an aberration, I'm not going to go to the top of the range, but I don't see where Ruutu deserves less money either.
I award Tuomo Ruutu a one-year deal at his previous salary of 3.8M with a player option for 2012-13.
Penner
Terms: 2 yrs + PO
GM proposal: 3.75M per; comps: see above
Agent proposal: 4.4M per; comps: Booth, Umberger, Franzen, Malone
Unlike Ruutu who underachieved, Penner overachieved, racking up 27 goals and 62 points with just a 72 OF rating. He was a force of a two-way player, dishing out more hits than he took, having a positive TA-GA ratio, and also dropped the gloves 9 times. He led the team in +/- and had 7 GWG.
It's really hard to look at Penner's season and accept the proposed decrease from the GM's side. Even though he outperformed his attributes, and it can be argued that any player could be put with the players he's surrounded by and succeed, Penner still had a strong season and played well defensively.
Interestingly, Penner had just 22 points in 77 games in 2010-11. So, what kind of player is he? His CON would be described as average, he's a below average skater, he takes a fair amount of penalties, and lacks the leadership quality that Ruutu possesses.
With what amounts to a 3-yr deal, because Penner won't reject a PO with a team like Carolina, there is plenty of time to see what kind of player Penner actually is. Because of the length of the deal, and the fact that Penner's 2011-12 season was so drastically different from his 2010-11 season, a minor decrease is understandable.
I award Dustin Penner a two-year deal at $4,000,000 with a player option.

Re: Carolina Extensions
A decision has been made in the Tuomo Ruutu arbitration case.
GM Proposal: $3.25 for 2 yrs (or 1 yr w/ TO)
comps: Kesler, Kunitz, Cole, Clowe, Armstrong, Clarkson, Hartnell
Agent Proposal: $5M
comps: Bobby Ryan, Dustin Penner
Quite a disparity of views in this case. The GM proposes a significant pay cut due to declining offensive production and a loss of status given other players on the roster. The agent proposes a hefty pay raise due to Ruutu's desirability as a two-way player on the open market.
The arbitrator believes that if given consistent 2nd-line time (at a minimum) and PP time, Ruutu's production would go up. That, and his consistency and leadership, also offset his lack of elite status at any one thing. However, the arbitrator also believes that a pay raise as proposed by the agent would take Ruutu into the ranks of the overpaid. The open market may indeed raise Ruutu's value, but the open market also paid Drew Miller $4.5M.
The arbitrator rules that Ruutu deserves a slight raise given his value to the squad: $4.1M.
