*Cough, cough, cough* Did somebody drop an eraser? There sure is a lot of chalk in the air. The top four seeds all hold serve at home on night one of the 2013 EHEC postseason. San Jose breaks through for four third period tallies to break open a once tight contest. Chicago also comes alive in the third, stealing momentum just seconds after the Wings closed the gap to 3-2.

Phoenix seemed to be in control through two periods, but the young Jackets valiant effort falls short as they fail to grasp the equalizer. Anaheim also made things interesting against the Flames closing to 3-2 as well, only to be foiled by Sam Gagner's backbreaker.

And, the story of the night. Dion Phaneuf injures a scrub Duck defenseman long-term. Fans is Calgary wait with bated breath to see how the Department of Player Safety will handle playoff suspensions.

Good game overall.
Guys like Shawn Matthias (who was outstanding in last year's playoffs too) and Vladimir Mihalik (pretty impressive first ever playoff game) who played PERFECT games is the kind of depth that we'll need if we want to make it far.

Now let's hope Dion is not suspended.

Phaneuf will definitely be suspended. It's just a matter of how long. Tommy and I have determined that we are going to evaluate all playoff intent-to-injure suspensions on a case-by-case basis. So, we won't be following the regular season suspension policy.

Reason being, let's say Anaheim loses in 5. Vishnevskiy just misses this series and is ready to go on Opening Night of the regular season. But, Phaneuf, by rule as a repeat offender, should miss 12 games (8 + 4 (1.5x)). That means he would miss the entire second round, while the Vishnevskiy injury stops being a problem once Anaheim is eliminated.

Obviously, Anaheim could win the series. Then, Phaneuf's suspension carries over well into next season, which also doesn't seem right.

Suspensions are far more hurtful in the playoffs as well. Missing games now is not nearly the same as missing them in October or November. On that alone, they're definitely more costly, even if they are shorter term.

Tommy and I are discussing the Phaneuf incident and will have an answer this afternoon.

Ironic how the Coyotes can't even sell out the arena in a simulated environment.

The Jackets will be better next game.

The EHEC Department of Player Safety issues the following statement:

We have reviewed the incident on April 15 between Dion Phaneuf and Ivan Vishnevskiy. After viewing the video several times in real-time and slow motion, we have determined that there does not appear to be any malicious intent on Phaneuf's part, but it was a reckless and dangerous play that cannot go unpunished. Vishnevskiy failed to protect himself against the boards, however Phaneuf has a responsibility to be aware of the opposing player's safety when his numbers are clearly showing. The hit from behind that resulted in Vishnevskiy's long-term knee injury was the result of a dangerous, illegal hit that had a very unfortunate outcome.

Because Phaneuf had already been suspended this season for a long-term injury, he was well aware of our commitment to player safety and the removal of as many of those reckless hits out of the game as possible. We see fit to suspend Phaneuf for three (3) games as a result of a this incident and hope that a costly suspension during playoff time is enough to get Mr. Phaneuf to play more responsibly. Under different circumstances, a play like this would warrant a two-game suspension, but as a repeat offender, a harsher penalty needed to be enforced.

This suspension will span Games 2, 3, & 4 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal series between the Calgary Flames and the Anaheim Ducks.

I would have suspended him for the remainder of the Ducks series. Makes sense! Like Whitney should be for my series against the Panthers, but not complaining. :D

I fully support the league's decision regarding Phaneuf's suspension.
Let's hope this isn't too costly to our team though.
