2013 Draft Chatter

Post by TorontoGM »

I seem to remember we usually have a thread to discuss various topics involving the draft.

Sooo how about that top 5? Thoughts? :P

If I were an EHEC Stars fan I would be reacting somewhere between how I felt when the Leafs traded Rask for Raycroft and when they blew a 3 goal lead in game 7.

As a Rangers fan I would probably be completely wasted for a different reason.

Guys, this is why I stress sending lists. Please, if you aren't going to be around for your pick or if it's going to fall overnight or something else, send a list of the guys that you want to me, Bub(NYR) and CapsGM.

I understand that you may be waiting on an answer from another GM about a trade or something. But if not, send a list.

Regarding OTT, he lives in France, which is a six hour time difference from Eastern Standard Time. So it's 6:10 a.m. there. Hopefully he'll pick over the next couple of hours, since I don't anticipate Tim, Pat or I to be around at 4 a.m.

Also, to be clear, the time limit starts when the pick in front of yours is posted.

We should get up to #14 fairly quickly. At which point, I will probably just auto pick for Ottawa again to keep things moving.

People that time out should have their next time bank cut in half; a second time out should result in you being auto'd the entire draft.

We discussed changing things up after last year's draft and never continued the discussion.

So far, with the exception of Ottawa, we've been able to do a good job of getting in touch with GMs.

Not at all.

A lot of teams have their rosters where they want them and would rather plan for the future. I got several good offers for 19/20, but I don't really need NHL players right now.

An odd and interesting draft so far. Not going to knock anyone's picks, because I'm sure everyone who actually made their own pick had a good reason for doing so. Maybe a few reaches to be sure, but then maybe my own pick at 21 was a reach.

Having said all that, I never thought that standing pat at 4 and 5 would yield both MacKinnon and Jones. It was tough to pass up Nichushkin, but in the end I think MacK was the better fit for me.

This. (The planning for the future part, not the roster is where I want it part.)

Had discussions with various teams about moving up, down, and out of the first round. Decided there was just too much talent in this draft to miss out.

Copied from League Memos thread:

It has been brought to my attention that we have a few duplicate players in the file. I hope to fix them tonight. I will let you know who is swapped out for who. But, for now, in the event that they come up for whatever reason...

The real Sergei Tolchinsky is the one with the i at the end of his name.

The real Marc McNulty has 61 CON.

The real draftee is Michael Guigovaz, not Giugovaz. So the goaltender with 75 CON.

I will replace the duplicates tonight and post a new file with the trades entered.

I'll let you know who replaces them.

The duplicate Sergey Tolchinsky has been replaced by Dane Birks.

The duplicate Marc McNulty has been replaced by Nicholas Paul.

The duplicate Michael Guigovaz (goalie) has been replaced by Brendon Burke.

Maybe you shouldn't trade for a pick 15 minutes before leaving the house and then getting drunk before making it.

Without the ratings accuracy, general lack of size up front, and abundance of defensive defensemen being the main solid players in the draft, there aren't many other options, especially for a team looking to add big forwards like mine.

Skilled players get taken in the draft. That's today's NHL. That's why the CSB is littered with guys 5'8"-5'11". Bigger, power forward types seem to be signed as free agents after college or plucked out of who knows where.

I'm limited with the way EHM is set up. I can't make a 6'1" guy with 90 HI. It's just not possible. I wish I could, but I can't.

You can edit their stat to being already good at hitting, regardless of the ceiling. Geertsen is 60 OFF already with terrible offensive ceilings.

Guys like MacKinnon, Drouin, Jones and Zadorov for examples. 2 of the 3 best players in the draft, as highly touted as they are in real life, only get 65 and 71 CON's? These guys improved every year, and then dominated the Memorial Cup. Jones is "supposed" to be a franchise type defenseman, but 2 of his defensive categories, might hit 82-ish. Lastly, Zadorov, he's probably one of the most hard hitting defensemen, along with being consistent, and he's not even a 90 in hitting. Just saying some things are off.

I understand that.

I understand that as well, my logic though is, that's EHM's biggest flaw. Some of the NHL's hardest hitters, are Tootoo, Kaleta, Brown, Kronwall and Clutterbuck, yet they're hindered from being as effective in EHM because of the under 6'1 rule. Would ANYONE not have considered Darius Kasparaitis a "99" hitter?

Just griping out loud.

A few thoughts...

...it's no use complaining about any of the vets in the file. They were rated what they are when the league started. It would be like me complaining about the guys on my farm who are solid NHLers in real life (John Carlson, Derek Stepan, etc). That's how they were rated and that's what we were given.

...Seth Jones can still hit 88 in two of his DEF categories. And there are some who aren't convinced he's a real-life franchise D. I think Adam's ratings reflect that.

...each EHEC draft is an attempt at some kind of balance, in my view. Since there is no consensus Ovechkin/Crosby like player out there, most players in this draft have some (at least) minor flaw or drawback to their games. Gives you more to think about when drafting.

...so a fully developed MacKinnon or Nichushkin, even with 71 and 69 CON respectively, won't be dominant players? Well, um, okay then.

...do we really need to start listing guys who were highly touted junior players who never became dominant NHLers?

...I understand your issues with the EHM system itself. Everyone knows them and everyone has gripes with them. But complaining about our drafts is like professional golfers who complain about the course: we're all picking from the same pool, and all playing against each other. If down the line Zadorov's 90 hitting is one of the best in the league, should someone complain that it should really be a 99?

Again, I understand that.

How do you figure they'll hit 88 without "100" ceilings? I'm asking to find out, not to be offensive.

Right, but guys who have done what they've done, should have a bit higher CON's I believe, again, just my opinion.
...do we really need to start listing guys who were highly touted junior players who never became dominant NHLers?
Not at all, but for everyone they don't list that fails, there's one in some other class, that isn't able to reach their possible potential, but I understand the necessary balance.
...I understand your issues with the EHM system itself. Everyone knows them and everyone has gripes with them. That won't happen. I'm of the mind, that any player that ends up on the top end of the CSB, shouldn't have a CON lower than 60-ish. There aren't very many Alexandre Daigle's (players with great talent, but the lack of interest in using it). And yes, they should complain. If a 90 is the "highest" on a 99 max, then there are other players getting short changed as well.

Again, I understand everything I've mentioned is stuff that can't change. I'm simply venting, not to be re-told everything I already know, just simply venting.

Also, why not have participation points in the league (articles, game results, sending in lines), then you can use them to buy players CON increases, or maybe have off season training camps, that you can send players to, and have them improve on a couple of categories etc? Not enough to make them all mega stars, but maybe enough to push certain guys over that little hump to make them better. Just a thought, more thinking out loud than anything.

Jones hitting 88: overtraining. Look it up. ;)

There are participation points given out occasionally. You don't always get to fully choose what bonuses go where, but there is the occasional cookie handed out in this league.

I get your gripes, and I'm not smacking you down. I just disagree with them, within the context of this league. To me, it makes things more interesting than having, say, 10 A-level guys with 85 CONs at the top of the draft.

I'm not asking for 10 guys with 85 CON's, just not high rated ones with high 50's low 60's.
