Calgary Flames 2013 Draft Review

Pick #46: Adam Erne
Tremendous offensive winger with a somehow good defensive game. Although he isn't the most consistent player out there, his skillset was too good not to pick him at this point. We already had success with players who were said to have consistency issues so we believed that it would be no different with Adam Erne.

Pick #47: Josh Morrissey
Josh is a very mobile, minute eating, two-way blueliner. He lacks a little size but his overall game is very versatile. He can play both special teams and log in big time minutes with ease.

Pick #48: Justin Bailey
Two-way forward Justin Bailey was a pleasant surprise at this point in the draft. He's a big body that will get his nose in the dirty areas. His offensive upside, combined with that gritty style of his will most likely help him climb our depth chart quicker. It's known that our team is really high on this kind of kid.

Pick #49: Mason Geertsen
An enforcer with great consistency and offensive upsides to play the point was just what we were looking for at this point.
Mason's offensive game is better than what was first expected out of him and his defense will only get better in years to come. He's already got strength and leadership of a veteran player. We are looking at a guy who's going to hit people every night and drop the mits when the time is right. Exactly what this organisation is looking for.

Pick #78: Ivan Bocharov
After alternating backup goalies for the last 2 years, finally a goaltender is joining the ranks. Teams were scared of his lack of consistency, but with the potential he shows, we are willing to give him a shot.

Pick #84: Ryan Graves
Character guy. Similar to what Geertsen brings to the table, minus the already developped offensive game. He will be a perfect bottom pairing kinda defenseman in a couple years. I personnally think you can never have too much of those guys.

Pick #136: Marc McNulty
Geertsen... Graves... And now, McNulty. We had in mind going into this draft that if we were able to get 2 really big defensemen, we would be happy. McNulty is a little bit more of a long shot but again we our confident in what we saw in him.

Pick #149: Matthew Murphy
Really intriguing pick. Lack of consistency is probably what kept his name from being called WAY sooner but we are glad we could chose him with a pick that high. Projects to be a complete two-way defender with good size and notable playmaking abilities. I can see this pick being the steal of the draft.

Pick #179: Matt Buckles
Long shot. If he steps his game up in the next couple years he could be a very good faceoff guy with a tremendous shot and great skating abilities. At that point, he was worth taking a chance on. We'll see how this guy turns out.

Pick #209: Maxim Mamim
Second to last pick in this draft. WIth not much to chose from, Mamin was the best player left out. He's got some nice intangibles but nothing we already have in the system. Good depth to have. He will be a AHLer at some point, for sure.
