An award has been determined in the Marty Reasoner arbitration.

ATL comps & proposal: Slater, G. Campbell; 1M per for 2 years
Arbitrator comps: Kopecky, Nieminen, Dvorak (admits he's overpaid, sorry FLA)

My arbitrator agreed with the proposed number from ATL, so not much explanation is needed here.

Tom, you can accept/reject Reasoner at 1M for the next 2 years.

Re: Winnipeg Jets Contract Offers

Post by Virtual Jarmo »

Awards have been determined in the arbitration cases of Raffi Torres and Todd Fedoruk.

Torres
Terms: 1 yr, team option
GM proposal: 1.8M per; comps: Pyatt, Langenbrunner, Pisani
Agent proposal: 2.2M per; comps: D. Miller, Moreau, Hunter

Immediately, off the top, the Drew Miller comp is viewed with a grain of salt. Miller was part of a rather strange free agent bidding war this past offseason and it's hard to use Drew Miller's 99 HI as a comp to Raffi Torres's 80 HI. Also, there is a rather sizable CON difference between the two players. Pisani also has an 80 CON. The only real valid comp from the GM is Pyatt, and, in fact, the other two comps would argue for a higher salary for Torres.

Both GM and agent used comps for players whose leadership skills far surpass what Torres brings to the table. Langenbrunner and Moreau are both up over 80 LE. Taking into consideration that Moreau and Hunter are around the same salary as Torres.

Because neither side was able to make a highly effective case one way or another, both applying one comparable player that was a good representation of Torres, I will simply go directly in the middle and award Raffi Torres a $2,000,000 salary for next season with a team option for 2013-14.

Fedoruk
Terms: 1 yr, team option, two-way
GM proposal: 1M per; comps: Moen, Staubitz, Cooke
Agent proposal: 1.5M per; comps: Moen, Vandermeer, Boll

One thing that neither GM nor agent mentioned was that Fedoruk contributed quite well during Winnipeg's deep postseason run and should certainly be entitled to a raise based on that alone. We've seen countless players get more money than they were probably worth just because of playoff success. Fedoruk is an 80 CON player with good leadership skills and is a valuable fighter.

Moen seems to be the best comp that either side provided. Both Fedoruk and Moen were part of their respective team's Stanley Cup run and Fedoruk is a better player than Staubitz and Cooke.

I believe that Fedoruk's agent made a stronger case here and that Fedoruk should be compensated as such. I don't think that Fedoruk is worth nearly a 100% raise like the 1.5 suggests, but he is certainly closer to the agent's number and the case that was made, along with the postseason success that largely went unmentioned.

In this case, I award Todd Fedoruk $1,350,000 for the 2012-13 season with the team option for 2013-14 and a two-way.

Tommy, you can accept or reject the awards to Torres and Fedoruk.

An award has been determined in the Jack Campbell arbitration.

Length: 4
GM proposal: 3.4M per; comps: Enroth, Varlamov, Bernier, Irving
Agent proposal: 2.7M per; comps: Helenius, Pickard, Enroth

Not much to discuss here, as the Jets are offering 700k more than the agent's proposal.

I would like to thank my agent for the time and effort he put into this arbitration case, even though it would seem to be all for naught, his client got paid, so I'd assume he's pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Tommy, you can accept/reject Campbell at 3.4M for 4 years.
